Continued our (slow) but still going play-through of #My City. This is still such a fun experience. We're about half-way through the campaign (Episode 4/8) and each new addition is an interesting twist to what you are doing. Can't wait to play this through, but I'm not in a rush to finish it, due to how much we are enjoying it.

Many many plays of #Nidavellir ever since it's been online on the (other) BGA. This is so fast, so fun and I try to explore different paths each time I play.

Revisited #The Voyages of Marco Polo after trading it for #Marco Polo II: In the Service of the Khan. Even though I like the open-ness of the successor, the original is one of my favourite games. It's so clean and tight. The character powers are much more interesting and crazy. I played a breezy (despite being tense) game with the Mercator who just leeches off other player's visits to the market.

Lastly to round-off the online plays. Played my first game of #Mystic Vale and I'm surprised I hadn't tried this earlier. The push-your-luck mechanic coupled with the card crafting is really well done.

This is an awesome idea and I think something like this (at a glance, diversity of opinions and aggregated) has been sorely missing. There have been forum posts that have tried to aggregate this information, but not quite like this.

Well done folks! Can't wait to see it in action.

#Twilight Struggle - I love the Pax series of card-driven games. I also really enjoy tense 2P experiences. There's enough geopolitical flavour here that I feel I would enjoy this immensely.

#Power Grid - I enjoy auction games, I am not very good at economic games. I would like to at least give this a shot once.

#Caylus - I have the 1303 version but I haven't played it yet. Being the OG worker placement game, and in true classic euro design can also be very interactive with the potential to make some mean moves. Would love to play this.

  1. Innovation sold me on Carl Chudyk's games and after playing half a game of GtR, I knew this was something that scales better than Innovation. While $250 is a lot, some of the KS's these days have been really pushing the upper limit. I think it's the high end for a game, but if it's a grail game, I can see it.
  2. Not a lot of gaming this year, but #My City was a hit with my wife's sisters while they were briefly staying with us for a couple of weeks. It was an easy entry to legacy games which continued to stay engaging and challenging.

  3. #The Castles of Tuscany - When it was announced, it seemed like it would be a step-up from #The Castles of Burgundy. While it had some common themes, ultimately it was a different game. However, it was quicker, easier to teach, fun to play and less fiddly. I adore #The Castles of Burgundy but this is the one that's staying in my collection for now.

  4. Here's my current Top 5 in no particular order:

    * Pax Pamir - gorgeous production, novel experience with each play
    * Cosmic Encounter - wild swings, completely player-driven, endless variety
    * Marco Polo 1/2 - tight dice placement euro, different paths to victory, game-breaking player powers
    * Underwater Cities - delicious decision space, lots of ways to score points
    * Concordia - elegant hand-management, breezy to play

(technically Tzolkin does get asymmetric player abilities with the expansion - but they aren't nearly as game-breaking as Marco Polo)

you should try it! It's a great game - and there's a good implementation on BGA so you can give it a shot if you don't already have it in the collection.

I'm always hesitant to rate things, but watching enough year-end lists has shown me that it doesn't need to be a big deal.

Here are my current 10/10's (ratings are always subject to change)

#Pax Pamir (Second Edition) - Lavishly presented slice of history, which isn't covered by many other games. The interactions are meaningful and the game feels different each time.

#Cosmic Encounter - it's not for everyone, but it's a fantastic game that is completely dependant on how the players play it. Enough variety that it is still full of surprises and there's always a moment which raises eyebrows or hands in any session.

#Concordia - I didn't fall for Catan as hard when I first played it, because I was already a few games into the hobby game scene. This game is what I wish I was playing when I play Catan :P Easy to teach (other than the scoring), and smooth playing throughout.

#Race for the Galaxy - mentioned in their comment that it's THE perfect tableau builder and I agree. 2P game is one of the quickest, deepest under-30m game that you could do.

#Android: Netrunner - It's a shame this isn't around anymore. It's a shame I missed the competitive scene, but in terms of 2P card battlers not-named Magic, this should be top of that list. The intrigue and the double guessing, the heart pounding few seconds when a runner makes it into your corp full of agendas. It's a fantastic experience.

#The Voyages of Marco Polo - This is the game (along with #Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar) that made me fall in love with Eurogames. I will always enjoy the moment when someone teaches you the game and then saves the player powers for the end. "What you can do WHAT?"

Even though I've swapped this for #Marco Polo II: In the Service of the Khan, I will never turn down a play of any of these games.
