This is a good game that is oddly guided by the random coin flips. The game would have been much better off with dice for the random factor. The core of the game is very good, though. There is a bit of a runaway leader problem.
This is a decent 2-player game that does a few things right, but in the end is nothing spectacular. The way you select actions is pretty inventive. Feld always has some unique mechanism in his games, and this one is no exception. Every round has both players in an agonizing decision, and what's cool is that each player is thinking asymmetrically. The player laying their markers first has different things to think about than the player laying second. It's a very interesting action selection mechanism. I am also a fan of how nice this game is. You aren't beaten down, and you can generally accomplish what you set out to do. It's a very rewarding experience. The game is pretty stale however. It's not one to play everyday for weeks. It's a nice refresher every now and then. I'm also not a big fan of the coin flipping mechanism. I get what Feld was going for, but it's just too painful for me to see all my hard work go to waste just because of a few bad flips. However, there are some easy house-rules to remedy this. Overall, I've settled on a 6.5 for this game, and the BGG text is perfect for this rating: "Ok, will play if in the mood".
