Knizia can do auctions with two players like no one else. The tension between scoring for large numbers vs. commodity monopolies is great. Less great is the tile-counting and the utterly unthematic tendency for both players to lose money throughout the game. Very good, but I prefer Ra for two.
I actually enjoy this game more than its big brother. Then again, I enjoy two player games more than the average BGG inhabitant seems to. Valuation is certainly table-dependent in this game, but that's not such a bad thing, especially when you consider the price paid for being tile-short at the end of a round. It can really drive up the attention, and it makes you pay even more attention to the state of the game than you do in Medici.
