I adore the time period, and I have faith that the game feels different with each player count in worthy ways. The rules are a disaster, and needlessly obtuse to a ridiculous degree; but once you internalize them things move relatively swiftly and usually cleanly. That said, the game suffers from a few intractable flaws. For one, I fail to see how France can do well if everyone gangs up on it, and I fail to see how France doesn't run away with the game unless everyone gangs up on it. I guess I just don't appreciate games where there's a nominal team but only one winner. Shockingly fun and interesting given the train-wreck of a rules manual. Can't hold a candle to Successors, though.
