8/30/2011: Just played this back-to-back for 3 or 4 hours. An excellent game. Reminds me a bit of Condottiere, and not just because they both involve the Medici; they both have a bunch of standard 1-10 value cards, but some special cards as well. Each game plays out quite differently. It's very dynamic. After about our 7th game, I made this comment: "You know, this is one of the best 'standard' card games I've ever played." You could pretty easily play this game with a Sticheln deck, or even a standard deck of cards. Even so, it's definitely a great buy at less than $10 a pop.
Building up your own court's prestige and power while tearing down your opponent's. Simple rules with emergent strategies; lots of ways to use the card interactions to get what you want in the game. Enjoy it more with a regular deck of cards with no theme. The Medici political drama theme is so poorly represented that nothing is better. Literally.
