I think it is getting there. Board games are appearing in other media consistently more. Settler's of Catan is known by more non-gamer communities. But I agree with Roland, I don't think it is quite mainstream yet. 

To clarify, I think that is 'our' type of boardgames, not Monopoly. Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess, checkers. Those are clearly mainstream Americana. 

I have noticed a huge uptick in Dungeons and Dragons. Players at our weekly gaming event have gone up by 300-500 percent in just the last year or two. This also has happened at the high-school level. I am amazed at how many players there are at my son's school. I don't know if Stranger Things was a cause, but it has grown exponentially in just the last 24 months.

Totally agree with Roland's points. I would add:

Maybe not as relevant on such a small map but if you can focus on clearing an area of the map to stop them exploring to/from it earlier on, even at the expense of another area getting hit hard, I think it's so worthwhile as the more focused your efforts can be the better.

Would also highlight looking one turn ahead and effectively using your slow actions as fast actions for the next turn. The first area to be hit will again be hit hard but if you focus on preventing areas being built on rather than being ravaged you'll slowly gain momentum on the invaders. 

Specific styles of play really depend on the spirit. I find if you can make the indigenous people do a lot of the work for you it can be really useful: move a whole bunch into an area and then throw a defense in there. The hutsbcan do massive damage if they can survive the initial ravage and defense/movement cards tend to have a lower cost for the amount of movement/defense compared to damage cards.

Also, cards to move the enemy may seem weak and only putting off a problem, but if you can clump the enemy your big cards hit harder and shift an explorer out of an area before he builds saves you so much effort in the long run.

Just a few thoughts but unfortunately I haven't had time to watch your vids so can't comment on what you did/didn't do. 

Glad to see I'm enabling more of the community here lol! I actually JUST set up another trade with BoardGameCo because honestly the shelf space I gained from the last trade was quickly taken up. This time around I'm trading:

#War Chest (sorry lol), #Mystic Market, #Point Salad, #Roland Wright: The Dice Game, and #Paladins of the West Kingdom.

Point Salad and Mystic Market I've been okay with getting rid of for awhile - just had to convince Sarah to part with them which turned out to be easier than expected. Paladins was pretty disappointing for me as I've discussed on here before. I think it has to do with me just being pretty bad at the game and it taking forever to set up. If I were any better at it, I'd have a little more desire to play it over the loads of other games I own. War Chest I like enough, but Sarah really doesn't. I honestly could have gifted it to either my brother or a friend or two just to keep it nearby, but again too many other games to play over it. Finally Roland Wright was one of the several roll and write (go figure lol) games I got from a Secret Santa. I had zero interest in playing it after checking out reviews.

In return I'm getting a NIS copy of #Trajan which I'm really excited about. 

Outside of my BoardGameCo trades, I've made a lot of trades in math trades both through BGG and Abecorn which the Board Game Barrage podcast uses for theirs. I find shipping to be a real deterrent sometimes but when you think about the idea of giving up a game you don't really play anymore for one you're excited to play for a few bucks, it sometimes is more palatable. Interestingly I find myself trading away games that I traded for more often than games I've purchased myself. Although I guess recently that hasn't been the case with the need for more room on the shelves.
