Mint Works is a light and straight forward worker placement game. Its compact size makes it easy to put in your pocket and take it anywhere. Its simple rules make it easy to introduce new players to worker placement games. During the game each player will have a limited amount of Mint Tokens, which represent their workers. Players will use these mint tokens to earn more tokens, take first player or buy and build plans. Plans are how players earn points. Some plans will only give points, others will give extra powers to the owner. Once any player has at least 7 points earned (or if there are not enough plans to refill the stock) the end of the game is triggered. The game will then be over at the end of the current round.

  • For the most part, Mint Works is an exercise in cool, compact & portable packaging design. Unfortunately the game itself is an entry-level worker placement with a nonexistent theme that just doesn't hold anyone's attention. Gameplay needs more minty fresh ideas.
  • Fantastic micro game.
  • Nice and quick game for when you have that itch to play some worker placement. This and Microbrew are now my go-to travel worker placement games!

The past weekend was a good one for gaming.

On Friday night, my primary gaming buddy, my 12 y/o son, and I played:

... before calling it a night.

Then, we visited my in-laws where we were able to play the classic #Acquire.

He won 5 of these games, and I had 2 (both Mint Works). He's growing up to be quite the gamer, and I'm so proud of him!

I picked up #Apollo XIII for $5 and gave that a play. It started out kind of boring for the first 20 minutes, but oh boy did it pick up. Once you start taking critical damage the time limit of 30 seconds really hinders you. We ended up killing the crew in the second to last phase, unfortunately, but it was an intense game and quite a thrill.

Also played #Mint Delivery. It was fun enough. We do a lot of backpacking so we were testing this one out since our collection of ultralight board games is pretty small ( #Mint Works, pnp version of #Sprawlopolis, and Pocket Landship). It was fun, not quite as good a game as Mint Works, but still enjoyable and we are bringing it on our trip this week.

Planning on playing #Mountaineers, #This War Of Mine: The Board Game, or #Vindication this week which are all on my shelf of shame at the moment.
