Castles of Mad King Ludwig is a tile laying game where each player is trying to build the perfect castle, subject to the whims of the King. Each player acts as a building contractor, adding rooms to the castle they are building while selling their services to other players. Points are earned based on how well the castle adheres to the ever-changing demands of the King. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!

Alspach's games run the risk of being a bit dry and soulless, and I enjoy trading-in-the-Mediterranean games. The room-filling bonuses really are the heart of this one and they are plenty of fun to engage with. The matching colored icons to score and the simplistic price-setting are less so, unfortunately. Still, this one is perhaps a bit more elegant than Suburbia, and the spacial element is a bit more satisfying. Though, frankly, I wish they had gone all-out on polyomino puzzling; the different shapes really only exist to facilitate different scoring options rather than another level of puzzling. Of course that wouldn't work well slapped onto this design, but I guess I'd prefer that sort of game to the one that actually exists here.
Fun and interesting tile layer with a great theme. I love building the castles because each one is different and unique. Each one says something crazy about you!My first castle features strange and scary underground dungeons-- and an awesome bottomless pit! My second was the queen's theatre/garden castle.
