In The Palaces of Carrara, players want to buy the marble from this famous region of Italy as cheaply as possible – but any reduction in price will benefit opponents as well. Maybe you'll find it profitable to instead invest in the buildings created from this marble? Maybe it'll be more worthwhile to grab the expensive raw material when bigger buildings in town turn out to be not so lucrative?

The game includes two levels of play: beginner and advanced. Co-designer Wolfgang Kramer says, "To understand the game, it's important that players play the beginner version to learn the game mechanisms and how they mesh together."

  • --Dec2013-- Quite entertaining. It's light and easy to explain, yet appears to have some tactical breadth. I like the way the table's groupthink (pace and specialization, at very least) mutate the decisions.
  • 2-4 players, 60 minutes, light medium, city building, Kramer/KieslingStill sitting on the shelve, waiting to be played....Traded away to make room for other games.
  • The game play is wonderful—a really enjoyable puzzle to solve. The components and graphic design a great too. But the end-game conditions are unpredictable and we really don’t enjoy them. It’s essentially kind of a race, which we detest, and there’s no way to know when the end will be triggered. We generally just play until the buildings run out but then the game almost feels too long.

We had a mini convention on campus. I ran:

I found even more appreciation for Palaces this week. The random scoring cards really change the landscape of the game. I felt this play was hugely different from my last one.

I also got my first game of Wingspan. It was a bit of a frustrating experience. The person teaching it was just a bit to smug the entire game with how well he was doing. It made it less fun. Getting bird cards was difficult and I didn't have an engine available that would let me get more. It made me realize the initial hand draw is super critical in this game.

Despite some of my frustration, I am intrigued by the game and would like to play it again. The production value is really high on it, it is beautiful. I'm still trying to figure out if I want it in my collection or not. I am leaning towards no, but want to try a game or two more to decide.

I played The Palaces of Carrara Board Game and broke out my new deluxe Arboretum: Deluxe Edition for the first time. Both good games.

I've been playing Agricola Revised Edition and Suburbia on my iPad this weekend. I also broke out and started Choose Your Own Adventure: House of Danger.

I am hoping to get my wife to the table for Z-Man Games The Palaces of Carrara Board Game. I've put on play on this and it is really nice.
