You've studied the footage, connected the dots, and gathered what meagre evidence you could. You're close - soon the whole world will know the truth behind the Cryptid. A group of like-minded cryptozoologists have come together to finally uncover the elusive creature, but the glory of discovery is too rich to share. Without giving away some of what you know you will never succeed in locating the beast, but reveal too much and your name will be long forgotten!

Cryptid is a unique deduction game of honest misdirection in which players must try to uncover information about their opponent's clues while throwing them off the scent of their own. Each player holds one piece of evidence to help them find the creature, and on their turn they can try to gain more information from their opponents. Be warned - give too much away and your opponents might beat you to the mysterious animal and claim the glory for themselves!

The game includes a modular board, five clue books, and a deck of setup cards with hundreds of possible setups across two difficulty levels. It is also supported by an entirely optional digital companion, allowing for faster game setup and a near-infinite range of puzzles.

  • First game I played on normal and made a rule mistake. 2nd game I played on advance and my brain literally wasn't able to process the board at all. This game while simple is really brain burning with a rule set not at all complicated
  • Excellent game! Was difficult to wrap my head around at first but once you "get it" and are able to deduce the qualifying location, it's a great feeling. Playing with the advanced rules really breaks my brain. You could play the game with a cheat sheet, and i'd recommend trying it that way when your first learning but there's also a part of me that feels like it's cheating. We've run into the issue where we've run out of tokens to place on the board. Supposedly, as you get better at understanding the game that becomes less of an issue. Also mistakes can just flat out break an entire game and it's easy to make those mistakes when transitioning to the advanced rules. We've played at least two games that were won just by random guessing, so that is a concern. But overall it's a very enjoyable deduction game.
  • Fascinating deduction game. Deduction is out of my wheelhouse. I am not really a fan of puzzles and the like, but this is competitive, and relatively quick. Good purchase when I was feeling like stepping out of my comfort zone.
  • I liked this game. We played it on the Easy Mode, and even then I still screwed up one of the clues. It was a long day at work though so I can blame that. Not sure I'll ever be good at this game. But it will be fun to explore for a bit.

Definitely heard of #Sagrada through recommendations, and I have a personal interest in #Mariposas... But the first time I've ever seen #Hadara is from your post haha. I've seen a few mentions of #Cryptid here and there.

It's awesome your secret santa got you something that you've been wanting for a while! Looks like you'll be plenty occupied for a while (:

Thanks! I'm most excited to try#Hadara I think. It's been on my wishlist for quite awhile. Outside of that,#Sagrada, and#Mariposas, I hadn't heard of the others so I just looked them all up :)

Based on my limited research, I also want to try#Cryptid with my parents when we go over for Thanksgiving

Holy crap! Is that a typical haul for one of these?? That looks awesome! #Cryptid is one I'd especially like to try.

  • #Space Battle Lunchtime Card Game - Two plays, my son won both times. I actually won this in a BGG contest. Their site doesn't list me as a winner but the publisher said I was so that works for me. It is an okay game. Something I wouldn't have bought on my own but I don't mind playing it.
  • #Cryptid - Two plays of this and I actually won for once. We've also been getting better at deducing the monster's location. Haven't needed any extra components in the last few plays.
  • #The Estates - One game. Crushed the kids.
  • #Cat Lady - One game. Also won.

I enjoy these posts. I actually had to include a couple months of plays to have 5 different games as we've played this handful a bunch of times in that time period but no others. Most of my plays since the pandemic started have all been lighter family games due to only playing with the kids at home.

1. #Imhotep - I thought about bumping this down to #2 but I am trying to avoid cult of the new-to-me opinion bias as I think this one will probably outlast the others in my desire to play. Had it for a few years now and still enjoy it.

2. #The Estates - Really like this one so far. Got it a couple months ago.

3.
#Cat Lady - The newest addition to our collection. My favorite cat is Cow. There's just something great about stuffing him full of as much food as possible for extra points. And with the Premium edition, having blanks cards and stickers to make  your own cats is just a nice addition.

4. #Cryptid - We've played this one the most. The kids enjoy it a bit more than I do but it is still a fun puzzle game.

5. #Tiny Epic Galaxies - Mainly brought this one back to the table a couple times to help me decide whether I wanted to back #Tiny Epic Pirates. Those plays confirmed that Galaxies is OKAY and that at least with the KS route, you pay a lot for the Tiny Epic gimmick. The deluxe version of Pirates & expansion with shipping would have been $48. And then if you wanted the add-ons (some of which would have been standard components in a regular game) you could have invested as much at $100....I cancelled my pledge in the final hour. You can a lot more game for that amount of money in other games I felt. But this is sort of off topic...

Kwanchai Moriya has made some amazing game covers recently and I've really liked his style.

Just to name a handful.
