You have been assigned to lead an ancient monastery and its brewery. Now it's your time to brew the best beer under God's blue sky!

The fine art of brewing beer demands your best timing. In order to get the best results of your production, you have to provide your cloister's garden with fertile resources and the right number of monks helping with the harvest - but keep your brewmaster in mind as he is ready and eager to refine each and every one of your barrels!

In Heaven & Ale, you have to overcome the harsh competition of your fellow players. There is a fine balance between upgrading your cloister's garden and harvesting the resources you need to fill your barrels. Only those who manage to keep a cool head are able to win the race for the best beer!

  • A game that I have enjoyed and offers numerous paths to victory. The type of game where you can't do everything you want to do and leads to meaty decisions with your every action.
  • rating based on 1st game, which was allright.
  • Nice strategic euro with lots of tough choices
  • I love this game! It really burns my brain a bit as I'm trying to figure out the balancing act between getting all my resources up while also trying not to go bankrupt and oh...scoring things at the right time. This game packs a punch! Setup takes a bit as there is a LOT of chit to deal with, and between rounds is a lot of chit as well. But all in all - this game is going to stay in my collection for a looong time because I have no other game like it.

Hmm, that is a fascinating concept.  Let's see...what if I took..mmm, say #Ecos: First Continent and we combine that with something like...oooh, oooh... #Wingspan!  Weaving them together well is the tough part, especially since the African birds expansions hasn't been released yet...I think the number of ECOS tiles revealed is the number of birds readily avaialable to choose from each round.  If you take the "gain food" action, you can forgo gaining one food to gain a symbol of your choice.  For the "lay eggs"action, you may forgo obtaining an egg to double the symbol net drawn from the tile bag.  For the "draw cards" action, you can forgo one drawn card to draw one additional tile from the tile bag.

That's as far as I got with that one but other fun game combos might be #Terraforming Mars & #Anachrony

#Heaven & Ale & #Troyes

#PARKS & #Wingspan (huge potential!)

#Tapestry & #Scythe

#Century: Spice Road & #Splendor

#Architects of the West Kingdom....never won a game. #Heaven & Ale my wife destroys me just about everytime. #Boggle and Becky kills me 5/4 games.

#Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island - I won one game with like 4 players and lost all the other 24 games I've played.

On Monday we were able to get #Anachrony , #Founders of Gloomhaven , #Wingspan , #Root , and #Heaven & Ale to the table.  I recorded our playthrough of #Anachrony but the rules explanation I had set up live didn't take as my kids were doing school online at the same time and being in the garage the signal was limited.  I'll post the rules and playthrough as soon as I can.

We had a lot of fun and I'll give more feedback on the modules we played with once I get the video spliced and uploaded :)

#Heaven & Ale...I'll try to get a recording of that in as well :)

I'm all for watching some #Anachrony! And since you're offering.. lol #Heaven & Ale

I don't think my brain works that way.  I fall asleep when I'm pondering how to defeat a game or design a game tends to put me to sleep rather than keep me away.  I played about 8 games of solo #Viticulture: Essential Edition over the past three to four games and sadly was only able to get within 3 points on my best game.  It didn't keep me up at night but I have not yet unraveled the puzzle of winning within 7 seasons.

I do love to read heavy rule books and drift into unconscienceness pondering the minutia of turn by turn play.   If I one day find myself in possession of #Brass: Birmingham or #The Gallerist I will likely spend hours perusing the rules working out various turn caveates in my head.

This coming Monday I have a PTO day in which I will spend the whole day playing boardgames with a recovering friend and will walk through a few rule books on games I am rusty on that we plan to play that day #Root, #Tapestry, #Anachrony, #Heaven & Ale, and if #Viscounts of the West Kingdom or #PARKS: Nightfall Expansion come in I'll be updating myself on those.

That's cool.  I have played 2 player games a couple of times and quite enjoyed it.  There's a different feel to it. #Heaven & Ale at 2 is much different than playing it at 4.

It's exciting to see someone else who likes #Heaven & Ale.  Such a great and often underrated game!

Pretty good week this week!

  • #Clank! In! Space! (solo physical x2):  one of my favourite games. I like the app for the solo play but just wish they would integrate the expansions in to it.
  • #Heaven & Ale (TTS multiplayer):  Second time playing it. Two players last time three this time. I definitely like this game!  It’s just a bit different than anything else.
  • #Race for the Galaxy (Board game arena multiplayer x2): couple of quick two player games with all the expansions. Once you have the cards and symbology down this is a great game to just play a few rounds of.
  • #Heroes of Land, Air, & Sea (TTS multiplayer):  Just has to try this one again. I went for an early victory but ended up losing on the tie breaker!  I quite like this game!  I want to get a full 4 now to see what that plays like.
  • #Civilization: A New Dawn (TTS multiplayer):  Since we had some time after I ended heroes a bit early we decided to try this one. I had heard mixed opinions but I liked it for the most part. I was actually ok with the tokens instead of armies. It was different but not bad at all!  My one complaint is that military was really strong at the end. I was lucky that one player attacked the other in the three player game which opened up the door for me to win. He could have easily attacked me and wiped out my chances pretty easily.  Definitely interested to see what the new expansion does.
  • #Tiny Towns with #Tiny Towns: Fortune (solo physical x2):  I’m trying out all of my soloable games and tiny towns was next. A very enjoyable game and one of my favourites. Solo is just as good for the puzzle aspect of the game but it is always more fun to see what everyone comes up with.

All in all all a good week for board gaming!

Ouch! That would be a dang hard choice!  Here's what I think off the cuff:

#Paladins of the West Kingdom - great solo experience and my wife plays and I think I can get the kids to play one day.  Possibly my favorite game to play solo.

#Gloomhaven - with so many quests to play I feel like if I only had five games I'd be able to get my family to play this.  The solo experience is great and I will probably play through the entire campaign solo at some point.

#Wingspan - One of our top played games and a favorite for Becky and I.  I enjoy the solo experiece with this game as well.

#Heaven & Ale - fantastic games and one of my hidden gems.  Not a lot of folks in the states play this one or have it high on their list as far as I can tell.  Becky will play this with me too.

#Scythe - The last game is tough to choose but Scythe has to me it because I have every expansion and it is great to play.  I've only soloed a few times but it is fun and it is my absolute favorite game with 6-7 player counts.  It's also blinged out pretty good, so this would be a tough one to pass on.

Runner Up - #Clans of Caledonia - could potentially replace Heaven & Ale but a tough call.  I think it would see slightly fewer plays than the others but the solo experience is solid.

Had a Saturday game session so got quite a few games in:

  • High Society: First play of this game.  It was quite fun!  It's short and definitely requires an ability to read people and predict future game states.  I'd definitely play it again!
  • Terraforming Mars: One of my favourites.  Last time we played we put in all the expansions and found it a bit much.  This time we pulled out Venus and everything to do with floaters.  The game was a lot smoother and focused to my mind.  I think we'll put back in the World Council bump to speed it up a bit as the game still took quite a while.
  • Western Legends: First play of this one for me.  I quite enjoyed it!  People were comparing it to Merchants and Marauders but I definitely prefer Western Legends.  The different uses of cards are great and the wanted vs Marshal points were great at creating conflict that made sense.  Now that I've gone through a game and seen it end to end I'm intrigued to get another crack at it.
  • Heaven & Ale: I wasn't sure what this one was going to be like.  I got a very good price on it used mostly because I'd heard good things about it.  We only played it two players but I think this was my favourite new game of the night!  It was super tight and it was always a scramble to find some more money to take an action you wanted to take further down the track.  Deciding when to trigger a given set of tiles was amazing.  I need money now but if I can trigger those tiles in 2 turns I'll get a lot more.  How do I make that happen?   This one I want to get to the table with more players ASAP!
  • Tiny Towns:  I've played this one quite a bit.  It's a good one to bring out when you have 30 minutes left at the end of the night.  Enjoyed it a lot as always.  It was just as fun at two players as it was at more.  (It's a bit meaner at 2 because you can easily see what the other player is going for and try to screw with them.)

Pretty good week for me!
