In Cartographers, players compete to earn the most reputation stars by the time four seasons have passed. Each season, players draw on their map sheets and earn reputation by carrying out the queen's edicts before the season is over. The player with the most reputation stars at the end of winter wins.

  • The game is definitely more fun than I thought at first glance. It's replayability is great and it's very competitive. It's simply and fast to start and play.

  • Played this a bunch of times. Though, i don't see myself getting too into the "roll/flip & write" genre i find this i s a good one to have.There is a problem with the "attack" cards in that they are dependent on your neighboring player. Some people are more vicious than others with their placement.Haven't played with the solo attack rules which supposedly helps a bit.
  • One of my most-played games. It's fairly quick, has some interesting decisions, and has a great scoring mechanism. Not to mention the nasty monsters.

The most recent game I taught was #Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale! I actually found it an easier teach than #Welcome to... even though it offers a slightly deeper gameplay. Another reason why it's my favorite "roll & write" now.

I actually can't think of a game that was especially tough to teach so far. I think it's because I typically avoid games that are way too complex to explain lol. Now, I do have several games I'll need to teach my wife soon, and they are #Pax Pamir (Second Edition), #Brass: Birmingham, and #Star Wars: Rebellion. Of those...

  • Brass -  Shouldn't be too bad and it'll be one of those teach as you play kind of games
  • Pax Pamir 2E - Will be hard. The rules themselves aren't too tough to learn but as a beginner to the genre, my wife will probably have a difficult time grasping the meaning of her actions
  • Star Wars: Rebellion - I've done zero homework on it so far so I have no idea how tough it will be. Complexity rating is slightly below Brass but games with significant variable player powers/asymmetry tend to take more effort to teach

The easiest teach? #Just One or #Skull

Personal approach? I just study the heck out of the rulebook, watch a video or search google for clarifications if needed, and teach when I feel confident enough to make it the easiest experience for my wife. It sure is hard though. I've done a lot of volunteering at church and at schools as a teacher, and I'm pretty comfortable with being able to convey the heart of a message. But when it comes to gaming rules, it's so easy to get caught up in the details :(

I prefer being taught so that I can avoid getting past the laziness. But I gotta say, as someone who's thorough in going through the rules, it's hard when the teacher is someone who's known to miss significant rules very often. Makes me feel like I need to double check!

#Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale - Played with my wife on Sunday! And I was right. She does like it more than #Welcome to... because it's a slightly deeper game. She was already having fun coming up with a "title" for herself and the name of the kingdom, so it was a good sign. I've learned from past mistakes that I should never go easy on her, so when an ambush/monster card came up, I drew it on a rather weird spot for her and she knew it was on lol. She wasn't too aware of how monsters work and drew mine on a space that actually worked better for me. Knowing that, when the monster card came up on the second round, she immediately drew it in the most awkward spot on my map and I loved it! Definitely our best under 30/45 min kind of game we have so far, and if we ever get some chill coffee date times in the future, I could see myself carrying it around (not that I drink coffee, since my stomach is pretty sensitive to coffee but not to alcohol for some reason...)

#Inis - Okay, we didn't get to play this. We got it out and I explained the rules, but by the time we were about to start playing, I sensed that we'll end up having to end the game at mid-point when our son wakes up from his nap. So I quickly made the switch to Cartographers, explained the rules, and we got going fast. I'm really glad I made the right call or else it would've been so anti-climatic.

Pre-game thoughts: I read the rules for Inis. And it comes off as an elegant, abstract, highly tactical game that promotes compeititve play. Here's what I suspect so far:

  1. I'll probably like the overall mechanics and appreciate its simplicity
  2. 2p gameplay comes off as chess-like. I can see 3 or more being the ideal count and where it'll be an entirely different experience with elements of negotiation/diplomacy to keep the leader in check
  3. After Leder Games' recent talk about the upcoming 2p focused expansion for #Root, it has rekindled my hope of it becoming one of our favorite games to play together. It has the perfect mixture of all elements I like in games--thematic ties in mechanics, good mixture of tactical and strategical plays, and the thrill of luck in combat--and my wife certainly enjoyed our last session together too but the base game is lacking in variety for 2p gameplay. For Inis, it comes off as an elegant tactical battle that I'll appreciate and have fun at higher player counts, but won't be dazzled by when it comes to 2p gameplay

I'll be trying out Inis two-handed either tonight or tomorrow so I'll get a better feeling for it! It'll be an odd one to two-hand though since the hidden info in cardplay seem to be its core element.

Phil so great to read another one of your reviews. My only experience with#Welcome to... is those two games we played online. That was really fun so it's interesting to see that you like#Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale more. This definitely moved the game up my list. 

I do like #Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale, and have played it a few times with a group (5-6 players) and solo.  I agree with you about making sure everyone is on the same page as far as understanding each of the scoring cards.  Some of them can be a little confusing.
