The gaslight streets of Victorian London. Horse-drawn broughams, hansoms, and dog-carts rattle over the cobblestone streets, pulling their passengers through the pea-soup fog. On every street corner, you pass booksellers, clubs, prisons, music halls, doctors, tea houses, and steamship companies. Yet in the shadows and dark alleys of this great city, horrible and cunning crimes are committed daily, confounding the policemen of Scotland Yard. Still, even the most ingenious crime is only a puzzle for the world's only consulting detective—Sherlock Holmes!.

The idea is so much better than the execution. It is fun, and I do enjoy it - but there are so many silly flaws.
I have spent many evenings playing this delightful game. Usually of course, I have a general idea of the solution to a given case after having visited a couple *dozen* locations. Then looking at the solution, not only does my theory turn out to be wrong, but Holmes demonstrates how the case could have been solved decisively in three moves. Arghh!
I am not a fan of deduction games, but this one is one glorious exception! My rating would be a 10, except for the fact that there will come an inevitable point when the limit of replayability is reached. And that is a gaming tragedy.COMMENTS ON THE ENGLISH YSTARI EDITION: It's all quite wonderful; yet the font is, at times, challenging to decipher in both the directory and the cases. The most annoying problem, though, is the very poor proofreading job that was done (or not done?) on the text; there are many, many instances of misspellings, and (even worse) situations where isolated French words have never even been translated! This is annoying, but it still does not mar one of the best games ever made.
This has a surprising amount of content in the box. I hesitated over the cost, because of the perceived lack of replayability. After playing half the content, I have 0 regrets about picking it up and I'd love to have expansions.I'd initially planned on gifting it or reselling it when I was done, but I'm holding out for more content now. It's not a flawless game. Some of the case content has issues, mistakes that make cases harder to solve than they should be. Still, there's so much fun to be had trying! It's a nice, quiet, contemplative group activity.Picked up the new Ripper standalone and was consequently ready to part with this edition.
