A Look at the 2020 Kennerspiel des Jahres Nominee - Cartographers
As a reminder, here are the nominees for this year's Kennerspiel des Jahres (Connoisseur-Enthusiast Game of the Year):
- The Crew - Co-op trick-taking game that has been talked about non-stop since the beginning of 2020.
- Cartographers - The best "roll n write" game to come out in the last 12 months.
- The King's Dilemma - A fresh take on the legacy genre that dazzled Shut Up & Sit Down (see year 2020 in this article).
With the announcement of the winner about a month away, I thought it would be fun to have Trent review these games, so I ordered The Crew and Cartographers as soon as I saw they were back in stock (The King's Dilemma was an obvious no since he'd have no one to play it with). Well, here's his take on Cartographers and why it could give Welcome To a run for its money for his second 24 hour marathon/stunt video! (But seriously, we'll need to come up with an idea when we hit 1K subscribers on YouTube. If you missed the first marathon, you can check it out here for Part I and Part II).
Here are some cool projects we're helping to spread the word! First, we have Wretches & Rewards which successfully funded last week. If you're looking to supplement you and your friends' adventures with rewarding monster encounters and memorable loot, make sure to check it out. Then we have AdapTableTop, which is continuing to smash through its goals and increased its funding by 30% since last week. Take a look if you're in need of a modular solution for your limited tabletop space and for preventing food/drink hazards.
- Wretches & Rewards Mini Adventures for 5e ($9,496/$7,406)
- AdapTableTop: A Modular System for Board Games and RPGs ($368,232/$21,294)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Inspired Board Game from Stonemaier Games in the Future?
It's a long way off, but Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games has been dropping hints of working on an open world exploration game inspired by Breath of the Wild. While it won't be based on the IP, it's certainly an exciting combination of keywords that immediately places it on my radar. It's all speculations at this point, but Jamey took some time to answer questions and provide some clarifications in the comment section of this thread.
It's an exciting time for Terraforming Mars fans or for those who've been holding back on getting in on the game for all these years. An upcoming Kickstarter will feature a "Big Box" and premium components for one of the most popular games in this hobby. Also, an official Pokemon board game has been announced! No idea how it will actually turn out, but it sure brings back memories.
Board Game Standing Desk?
Please watch this "product review" from The Dragon's Tomb, and I hope you share my sense of humor.
As always, you can have a chance to win a $60 value board game of your choice by contributing to the community. Leave comments, make a post, add missing data on the game pages to gain as many entries before the deadline! Which game would you get if you won? If I could qualify, at the moment I'd probably choose The Underworld Expansion for Root. And if gift card had been an option? I'd go for Too Many Bones 100%.
Thanks for the read! (For those who are curious, the picture at the top is featuring The Whatnot Cabinet, a game that Trent reviewed last week). Make sure to check out the Feed and experience a whole new way to follow what your friends on BGA are up to including comments, posts, plays logged, and more! Feedback is always appreciated. Lastly, I've been working on a video that captures last 7 years worth of traffic data on BGA and Board Game Prices (if you're not aware, we acquired BGP late last year). I'm hoping to share it with you all in the next newsletter!
