Selling/Trading games.

Supporter

I am proposing that there is a automated weekly forum bot under which we can list our games for sale or trade.

I propose further, that the bot is only to post your games for sale or trade. Any offers of games for trade, or counteroffers on prices be handled via private message. It should also be the responsibility of the seller to remove the listing, or update it with a "sold" when a game is disposed of.

Any thoughts? Is that a bad idea.

I like that it will keep the forum clean but does this mean that we'll need to re-list our games for trade each week? Maybe this should be a monthly post?

Supporter12 months ago

It might mean that. I don't think that is a problem for two reasons.

1: you want to keep your games up the in "the public consciousness." if you have a monthly post many occasional users will miss it unless they are looking for a specific game.

2: it keeps the list of games in the trade/sell part shorter and easier to look through.

That's all true. Makes sense

Good idea and keeps the forum clean.

A math trade program integrated into the website👍👍👍

YESS!

Supporter12 months ago

Oooo. I like it.

I've heard of these fabled "math trades" but still don't know what they are, exactly. What do you do in a math trade?

Supporter12 months ago

I have never participated in any, so feel free to correct me if necessary.

My understanding is that you make a list of the game(s) you are wanting to trade. You make another list of games you are wanting. People al over the country do the same thing. You all send your lists to a dude with a algorithm who mashes all the list together.

Once all the lists are combined you can do matches. For example imagine that I want to get rid of Castles of Burgandy, and one of my desires is 7 Wonders Duel. It turns out that X in Seattle has 7 Wonders Duel, but he doesn't want COB he wants Hanimikoji. Fortunately, Y in Dallas has Hanimikoji to trade and he is wanting COB. So I send my COB to Y in Dallas, Y sends Hanimikoji to X in Seattle, and X sends me 7 Wonders Duel. We all, hopefully, end up happy.

Sure sounds like math :)

Do you happen to know the general feedback from users? Whether the majority of these deals work out well or not?

Supporter12 months ago

The general feedback seems to be generally good. Obviously it gets more complicated the more participants you have but it also make the likelihood of getting the game you want higher.

Also, shipping games is not cheap. For this reason a lot of math trades are organized around conventions. Those attending can bring their games to get rid of, and pick up their trades.

People actually have time to go to conventions?

Supporter12 months ago

Apparently many people do. I am not one of these mythical characters. But, wish I were.

Supporter12 months ago

Even if I could actually get the time off from work, my wife would give me “the look” if I even started to ask about going. I’m sure many are familiar with “the look”...

Supporter12 months ago

Same here. No time or $$ for conventions. If my wife was into this hobby as much as I was then I could see us making a convention our vacation.

Supporter12 months ago

Yes, I know, it's not just getting to the convention. That is easy enough. Not is it all that you would spend on games, that is justifiable enough. It is all the expensive hotels, time off of work, expensive food.... And that is all money you could be spending on games instead.

Supporter12 months ago

Lol right! Plus my wife would murder me for missing time with my family.

Supporter12 months ago

I do think that one day I'll save up  a chunk and at least do a day or two at a convention

Supporter12 months ago

That does sound fun. I’m sure there are some cons up in the Twin Cities that I could go to. That wouldn’t be such a huge time investment.

Supporter12 months ago

A big one? Or a "local" con?

Supporter12 months ago

I don't know. I know one of my local cons has a pretty good set up. But I was thinking more of one of the bigger cons. BGG, Dice Tower, PAX unplugged  or Origins I don't think the huge Gen Con or Essen really appeal to me.

Supporter12 months ago

You should maybe be thinking along the lines of drive tower cruise....

Supporter12 months ago

I do think that one would be a lot of fun

Supporter12 months ago

That is the only cruise that I have any interest in.

Supporter12 months ago

It would be fun. All you can eat, all the games you can play. Its a good mix!

Sounds like math haha I can see those working well though. Definitely an exercise in trust, but I find most people in this hobby are pretty honest. (We don't like playing with cheaters haha)

Supporter12 months ago

This was a nice and clear explanation, much better than I could do.

It is a 3 person trade or even more.

I just saw all the trade/sale posts and now I understand where this came from haha

Supporter12 months ago

It was my fault
