With quite a drama going on between Stonemaier Games and retailers, I'm curious: Where's your go-to place for buying games?

I have a shop near where I work which has good prices and good staff. Kind of your typical FLGS idea. I'm always there when it's quiet mind you so they have time to chat with me. :) Their selection isn't the greatest but they can generally get in what I want if it's not too esoteric.
On the other hand there's another store in a mall that has a great selection, staff is reasonably friendly, but their prices are a bit high. I'll generally pay it if it's reasonable.
Finally, I'll always check out boardgameprices.com to get an idea of what a reasonable price is. I've ordered items from most of the stores on there and I've never had a problem.

That sounds fun! For locations like those, I can see why there are people who'd rather support them even if it means paying quite a bit more for their games.
I've been to my FLGS a couple times in the past and always enjoyed looking at their relatively big collection of video games ranging from classics like NES to the most recent consoles (just brings back a lot of good memories). Really like the retro/old vibe of the place and it's cool to see their music and comic collections too.
I recently visited their board game section but it was disappointingly small and limited to maybe 3 different shelves :( They didn't carry any of the gateway games I was looking for to play with my wife either. Unless I get to really know their staff I think I'll be sticking to what's most friendly to my wallet for now haha

I buy many games through Amazon & Big Box Stores but more hobby games, I will default to my local game store.

Is that because hobby games are usually more available at local games stores only?

That is part of it but also when I play games at a local game store, I am willing to pay a little more than online retail in exchange for opening the store up for gamers.

It might have been easier to ask me where I don't buy from.

I expect no less from you haha. Do you frequent Captain Nemos at all?
Yes. I am in there 1-2 times a month.

I do. Typically I buy from the used game section. I bought two out of there a couple of weeks ago.

It is at the end of the board game isle on the left. It is hit or miss. Often there is a bunch of crap, but sometimes something good shows up. Prices are usually good.
Will head there probably next week. Hope I find something good, my wishlist is only getting longer as I get deeper into the hobby but my budget gives me a reality check every time

Mostly Amazon and Target since I don't have any brick and mortar stores in my area. I have bought from conventions and a few other places in the past though.

Check out boardgameprices.com. Amazon is often (though not always) more expensive.

So how exactly do these stores compete against Amazon (especially if users have prime)? Is it just smaller margins?

I don't know for sure. If I had to take a guess it would be that the games we are looking at don't have a massive audience so many of them are sold through third parties. I could be completely wrong on that of course.

Same for me. Amazon & Target are were I get most of my games. I'll buy from Miniature Market or another store every once in a while if there's a good deal though.
We talk about board games here. Games like Codenames, Catan, Root, and all your favorites. Posts can link diretly to games and everyone is welcome to join the discussion.
