BGA Feature #68 A Ranking System Has Been Developed

Owner

As a bit of context, when you used to go to the game search results and order it by 'popularity' this list order has historically been created by scraping reddit comments looking for games labeled in bold and then tracking it all and showing games in order of how many times they were mentioned over all time (since I started tracking in Dec 2018).

This was meant to be a stop gap until we had enough data to generate our own list and today is that day! We've developed our own proprietary system that uses data including game page visits, the game lists, play logs, mentions of games in comments, linking to games in forum posts, game ratings/reviews, and a few other criteria that comes into consideration for a game to get it's rank.

We spent about 3 days fine tuning the algorithm and will continue to do so over time but it feels like a great start. You'll now notice that in the search results you'll be able to see a game's rank as well as on the game's page too.

I'm currently working on creating an improved "trending" system as well as a "discover" system that we'll hopefully be launching soon!

Looks good, would love to be able to see a breakdown of those metrics for each game and how you weight them to come up with the final number!

Sharing the exact breakdown is something that I don't want to do because then someone could abuse it and push their product up to the top if they know exactly what to do. However, it's based on about 6 metrics that we give different weights to (more weight is typically on things that are harder to abuse as well). Some of those are how many visits the game page gets, how many plays it has, how many lists it's on, how many mentions it gets in the forum, how many reviews there are, what the average review score is, and a few other metrics as well.

That makes a lot of sense, I promise I was just curious, I have no product to push 😄 It is such a interesting quandary, trying to quantify popularity or 'best' in such a subjective topic. I wonder if you asked people to give their favourite game and the game they thought was the best game, how often those answers would differ?

I had that question as well. Thanks for this helpful answer.

Great minds and all that jazz 😄

This is interesting having the rank being a different thing from the score. It’s sort of a combination of what is hot, topical, and good vs just what is good.

My gut says it will stop things from stagnating while also highlighting quality games.  There is still the score if people want a more static rating.

I am am curious to see where this goes!

I do wonder if there should be some indication of what rank means.  It might be confusing to see Scythe at #1 and 77 with Gloomhaven at #2 with an 82.

That's true, although I guess it means as scythe falls down on other metrics this will have a proportionally greater impact on it's rank due to it being lower rated whereas Gloomhaven is likely to stay near the top

For sure. And I like the entire concept. I am just wondering if there might be a way to let future users know that it is an amalgamation of various things. Like a tool tip or something.

Whoa this is AWESOME!! Great work! I look forward to seeing how this shapes up over time, and to the other features coming soon!

I'm also tracking changes as the ranking updates everyday so I'll be integrating that info into the website once there's enough to make some cool features with it.

Ha, I was about to ask that. It would be cool to see how games move up and down the list. It might be cool to go to a game's page and see a little chart showing its historical rank month by month, or something like that.

totally! I'm also developing a trending feature with similar functionality which will likely have a lot more movement.

Awesome! On the topic of adding things to game pages, I can foresee the game pages becoming too cluttered - information overload. Would you consider splitting some things off into sub-pages or tabs or something?

Owner5 months ago

Yup! I think it could benefit from some better organization in the near future as well.

Yes, a few specific tabs that you could open and close to focus on what you want would be great!

What is the threshold for a game to gain a rank? I was just curious and searched for a few of my favorites, and not all of them have a rank yet.

Owner5 months ago

Currently it's 20 reviews to get a rank.

Seems reasonable. Thanks!
