I played Terraforming Mars last night, I asked about some strategies earlier in the week, so here is the update! I got crushed lol. Well not terrible, it was just a low scoring affair in the first place. The winner was at 76, second was 67 and I was at 57. It was a made dash too, we played with Prelude and it just shaved off about an hour of play time! Crazy.

I also played Roll for the Galaxy for the first time, definitely an fun one. It does seem to me that it will take some getting familiar with it to fully grasp the strategy but I liked the mechanics of it.

Prelude is a must have I think for Terraforming Mars.  Speeds the game up and adds flavour for each player.   I won't play without it if we're playing my copy.

I've never played Roll for the Galaxy.  That and race for the galaxy are ones I'd like to try.

I forgot to mention I got The Mind and Quacks to the table with my In-laws. My Mother-in-law could not grasp The Mind...

I don't think I would play TM without Prelude either now. It felt quick and more interesting. It can slog without it!

Roll was fun! I liked the quick nature of it, there is a lot to take in for sure. Get ready to have your face melted by iconography.

Played Just One with my wife and my parents! I bought it a few days ago thinking they might enjoy it and that it might help them expand on their vocab (my family came from Korea back in 1999). They seem to thoroughly enjoy it and that's always a good sight haha. We got 3 points lol but I'm sure it will improve!

I just started The Rise of Fenris Campaign with a new group. Everyone was new to Scythe so we've played 3 standard games to get ready to play it now! I'm stoked!

Oboy, it's a big list this week as I was at SHUX.  I'm not going to link them this time as I'm a bit rushed but I got to play the following games (in some cases only partial games but I've listed anything I played enough to get a feel for):

  • Disney Villainous
  • Cryptid
  • Growl
  • Hadara
  • Dice Throne
  • Five Tribes
  • Crave
  • Vikings: Raid & Conquer
  • Wingspan
  • Marvel: Champions
  • Atlantis Rising
  • Sabotage
  • Tapestry

Feel free to ask for details and I'll do my best to give you feedback.

How was your experience at SHUX?? Was it your first time?

Third time for me as I live in Vancouver.  I absolutely love it!

The community is awesome, the SU&SD gang is awesome.  They have a great big huge game library so you can play games all weekend but at the same time they have funny shows and presentations to watch.  It's always a see saw of "I want to watch this awesome presentation but my gaming gang is about to start this awesome game!  What should I do?"

Last year Loading Ready Run was there so I watched a ton of shows.  This year I watched fewer shows and played more games.  (I love it when they play RPG's so I never miss those.)

It's just great to be in a place with 2200 other people (from ALL over the world mind you) who are all passionate about board games.  You can talk to anyone in line, join in on a game, and always feel comfortable and at home.

That's awesome! From what you said I'd be definitely interested in going if it had been near me xD...

Post a picture on the forum if you get a chance! Sounds like a nice celebration of the hobby in general haha

I've had Growl on my shelf for a few weeks but haven't pulled it out to play. What did you think of it?

I actually quite liked it!  I'm not a huge social game fan.  Mostly because I don't have a lot of situations to play it in plus many of the people I game with aren't fans.

However, the hook with Growl is you have more information than you have in other games so you can use some real deduction to narrow things down while still being able to engage in some social engineering as well.

I picked up the $10 "cards only" version which is all you really need to play it.  I think it might do well at work and for a break between heavier games.

Nothing unfortunately.  Our fourth kid is about 2 months old and it’s totally eating into my board game time haha.   But... my oldest plays games with me so hopefully we will get a game in this weekend
