My top 10 games I am most looking forward to playing.

Supporter

The last 2 or 3 weeks I have been swamped. I have been too busy too spend much time on the forums, and I have been too busy to spend time playing games. I trust that this busyness will slacken some, but, while I have been busy with all sorts of things, I have been daydreaming, at least some of the time, about playing games.

As many of you know, I am currently living in El Salvador, and shipping to here is unreasonable expensive. Add to that the mail system, such as it is, has been shut down for the last 3 or so months, and you have a situation. That dictates that when I buy a game I have it shipped to my US address and bring it back to me when I visit the states. I had been planning on traveling to the states in April, but Covid-19 got in our way, so I didn't, and know I have a fair amount of new games up there that I haven't had a chance to play.

Before I give this list I want to offer one disclaimer: This includes games that I have kickstarted. I don't know for sure when they will ship, but I do know that I have been daydreaming about playing them. So, without further ado, I give you the list.

  1. #Pax Pamir (Second Edition) I love the idea of historical games, and this is a fascinating time period treated in a beautiful manner. I really look forward to trying the AI opponent designed by Ricky Royal.
  2. #Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain. This is a COIN game. I haven't ever played a COIN game, and this is the most complex of them all. So, I am a little scared of it, but, I love this time period of history and I am really excited about trying it out.
  3. #Pax Renaissance 2nd edition. This sounds like a meaty game that you can play pretty quickly, sign me up.
  4. #Gaia Project A classic remake of a classic game which I have never played. I like heavy Euro's and this looks like a good one.
  5. #Pax Porfiriana Again, I love this time period, and am very familiar with the Porfirian period of Mexican history.
  6. #Root. I will be playing this solo with the better bot project. I am really excited about the gameplay. But, I am almost equally excited by the art.
  7. #Navajo Wars. This is a historically themed solo game. I am really excited to try it out.
  8. #High Frontier 4 All. This is a game I had no interest in, then I watched a Heavy Cardboard playthrough of it. That was a very unwise choice for my wallet. I ended up backing the Core box and all three expansions on the last Sierra Madre kickstarter. I expect I will mostly be playing this solo.
  9. #Greenland (Third Edition) This is a part of the world I know embarassingly little about. I am looking forward to exploring it more in game play.
  10. #1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties This will be my first 18xx game. I am tremendously excited, and tremendously scared. This is one of the more complex 18xx games, which make it, perhaps, a unwise choice for a newby like me. But, it is one of the few 18xx games that has a solo variant. So, I am looking quite forward to that.

Other games that might make the list on other days include,

#Pax Emancipation, #Pax Viking, #conquest of paradise

I always have fun looking at lists so great idea! :)

Here's mine, with a mix of games I own and ones that are on my shortlist of games to buy. I listed games I own first:

  1. #Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated - My wife and I are looking forward to Game 2 of our campaign. The legacy aspect of the game makes it a bit fiddly but it's also the part that makes this game memorable.
  2. #Concordia - There's something about this game that makes me want to give it a play ahead of other ones below. Simple premise with a relatively bland theme but the mechanics are so satisfying. Will be upping that quality of experience with component upgrades soon.
  3. #Viticulture: Essential Edition - It was our #1 game to play together for the longest time but not anymore. We have about 3-4 games that we could confidently say they're our top games, but can't decide the ranking. We still haven't played with the special workers and structures from Tuscany, so I'm looking forward to that.
  4. #Camel Up (second edition) - It's a great random game. I've been feeling that I should try to start up family game times more and this is a perfect game for that.
  5. #Root - I still stubbornly say this is my favorite game. I just need to give one more solo session a go with another bot so that I can attempt a co-op play with my wife afterwards. Maybe that could potentially shift things in our "top games" list, but I have my doubts. As much as I love Root, when it comes to multiplayer sessions, I prefer not needing to operate bots. But we'll see!
  6. #Clans of Caledonia - Talking with @sdirrane had me thinking that I should really get this out for at least a solo session.
  7. #Tapestry - Been pushing this off but I'm still curious how the solo session will go for this!
  8. #Too Many Bones - This and the other games below are on my wishlist. TMB is #1 at the moment. It has a lot going for it--the dice chucking, character progression, enemy encounters, and premium components to play with.
  9. #Brass: Birmingham - Everything about the game is attractive to me, including the artwork, mechanics, and components. I always enjoy games where my wife and I can place down structures on a common map/board.
  10. #Keyflower - I love a great game with meeples, and this gives a ton! It's a game that I'd group in a similar category as #Concordia at the moment. Smart mechanics with a great hook.

Looks like a solid list. What are the chances you will cave and buy more games this year?

Supporter5 months ago

Zero. I will win this fight. lol

Supporter5 months ago

I think you will buy two more games this year. One will be in a really good black friday sale, another one will be a really good gamenerdz, or other OLGS, deal.

Great idea! My ten contain some games I've probably had for months but just haven't gotten to play for various reasons including having my 2nd son born in January but I'm still really looking forward to getting them to the table!

  1. #Scythe
  2. #The Quest for El Dorado
  3. #Tapestry
  4. #The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine
  5. #Call to Adventure
  6. #Flick Em Up!
  7. #Viticulture: Essential Edition
  8. #Gloomhaven (I want to get some serious progression in there)
  9. #Teotihuacan: City of Gods
  10. #The Quacks of Quedlinburg: The Herb Witches (Just got this expansion recently!)

I really really want you and @philryuh to play #Scythe and report back to us.

I tend to get to play most of what pops up as there are several game buys in my group.  However, there is always more to play.  My list not in any order:

  • #Lisboa Looks cool.  Play is complex.  Should make for a juicy afternoon.
  • #Ra I like auction games with my group.  I'm not great at them but we have a ton of fun.
  • #The Voyages of Marco Polo: Ever since seeing it on SU&SD I've been interested in playing it.  Looks like my type of game.  No one in my group owns it...yet...
  • #Eclipse: Traded for this game quite a while ago.  Haven't been able to get it to the table yet!
  • #Rising Sun: I love dudes on a map games but I already own quite a few so I can't justify getting this one.  Maybe I'll trade one of my other ones away for it one day.
  • #Grand Austria Hotel: Every automated "find your next game" web site always puts this one in my top few.  Looks interesting, want to try it!
  • #Mombasa: It's always looked interesting to me.  I haven't managed to find it for a price I am willing to pay yet.

I guess I can add mine! I don't have 10, though, haha

  1. #Concordia - I'm anticipating buying this for the BLM fundraiser tomorrow!
  2. #Root - pardon my French, but I've been blue-balled with this game multiple times now, with plans to play falling through each time -__-
  3. #Evolution: Climate - I recently got some promo cards, and I'm excited to play using them!
  4. #Oceans - I just always want to play it, hehe
  5. #Western Legends - I don't know anyone who has this, but I really want to try it, and a friend of mine is really interested too and he said he'd chip in for it, haha

Sounds like you have a good friend.

Haha yeah. I've been the one buying most of the games in the last year or so, so he said he's happy to chip in for one

Supporter5 months ago

That is nice that he recognizes that and is willing to help.

He's a good one :)

You and me both of Pax Pamir...The wait for Kickstarters and pre-orders is rough!!

Supporter5 months ago

Yes it is, but, I have that wait any time I get a game....

Man that is brutal, espcially since you have so many good ones waiting for you and COVID has made the wait longer!

Supporter5 months ago

It makes me develop some patience, so that is good. LOL

Really it isn't the end of the world, but it has made me realize how much I was a part of the whole instant gratification culture.

It is hard to not be a part of that culture but there is a lot of value in gaining patience! That is a good reminder, so thanks!

Supporter5 months ago

You are welcome.

Dang that is a heck of a list of games waiting for you!

Supporter5 months ago

I am a fool, so, that list isn't even all of them....
