Games with the best beginning, middle, and an end
Like with anything, board games have a beginning, a middle, and an ending. I thought it would be fun to share about your picks for the best games in each category!
So what's your pick for each of these and why?
- Best Beginning
- Best Middle
- Best Ending

Obviously this is hilarious but I would also be genuinely interested if you feel the game shines throughout our if certain phases tend to be more/less exciting?

Haha, excellent! Always good when games manage to keep you entirely engaged throughout

LOL I guess I made the right decision in buying this.
It's still stuck in the garage unopened though xD (I'll unbox it this week and punch everything)

Best beginning: I am with @elmirfudd, I really like the beginning of #Catan. The whole thing about analyzing board state, placing all your settlements, and roads and imagining the possibilites.
Best middle: I'll pick #Star Trek: Frontiers. Once you have leveled up enough and you are just roaming around the galaxy fighting and stuff trying to level up enough for fighting the Borg. That middle part is an incredibly fun sandbox experience.
Best end: I really get a bang out of #Pax Porfiriana. A topple comes out, and sometimes it just gets snuck out from under you, or you manage to get sneak it out. I really like that.

Hahaha you're really going to make me buy #Pax Porfiriana some day. Now... how likely is it that it'll get a new edition some day? Do you see the "need" for it at all?

I could see potential for a "new edition" now that SMG has teamed up with Ion Game Design. If we see how Ion has really focused on cleaning up, especially graphic design elements, of games like High Frontier, or Pax Renaisance then I see the potential that they might clean Pax Porf up a bit.
Do I see a need for it???? Not really! I think Porf is a really weird game. And, it will appeal to a fairly small subset of gamers. I think that the gamers who like it will really like it, and the gamers who don't like it will consider it to be Munchkin but worse.
This is bringing thoughts about game accesibility to mind. I might have to write a post about it.

Thanks, I am afraid I can't comment as well on yours, because I haven't played it.
Maybe at BGA con you can teach it to me.

Maybe a bit if a rare take but I actually really enjoy the opening of catan. The later parts not so much

- I'm hard-pressed to think of a game I've played that has a beginning that stands out as being particularly good. I think pretty much all of the games I like get better as they go along, or are at least consistently good.
- Best middle - this could go to any of a plethora of games, but I'll go with one that's been on my mind lately: #Western Legends. This game is such a fun ride. Once everyone has their abilities unlocked, so many interesting things can happen, and the game is just a hoot.
Other good ones I could've picked could be the tactics in #War Chest, the engine building in #Everdell, or the combo building in #Oceans, just to name a few. - Best end - for me, this has got to be #Dune. The tension with not knowing whether or not the game is actually about to end, depending on which way a battle or two go is super exciting. And even if you get to the final round and you know the game has to end that round, there is bound to be multiple battles, and even when the game is basically over, you wait for the Bene Gesserit player to reveal their prediction from before the game started to see if they can steal the victory. So good!

It would be horrible if an "event" game like Dune had an anti-climatic ending. Makes me wonder if there are big games out there that just feel like there isn't an equivalent payoff for the time investment.

I've actually read that a few times about #Spirit Island - like you reach a point where you can see that you're able to win, but you haven't done it yet, so either the last few turns are not exciting, or people just don't even bother playing them lol. Not sure how common that is, but I have seen it mentioned.

1.#Star Wars: Rebellion. The Galaxy is wide open. As the Empire you are working on the ultimate weapon and are poised to eliminate the pesky rebel scum. As the Rebels you are well hidden and the Galaxy is full of opportunity to thwart evil and restore peace and justice to the Galaxy.
2.#Star Wars: Rebellion. Space and ground conflicts are tense. You aren't quite sure if the Empire has located the Rebel base. Perhaps a couple of planets have been destroyed by the Death Star. The imperial war machine is ramping up. Maybe Chewbacca has been frozen in Carbonite. Perhaps Luke Skywalker is still farming moisture on Tatooine.
3.#Star Wars: Rebellion. Most likely the Empire knows where the rebel base is and is racing to move fleets there to destroy it. Perhaps they discovered it with a token force and the rebels fight a desperate battle to give them enough time to relocate. The rebels are frantically trying to complete a few more missions that will tip the balance and generate enough support to overthrow the Empire. It might come down to one final turn. One final battle to determine the fate of the Galaxy.
