Do you also play video games?

Supporter

Greetings all! Just a standard question today - does anyone here also play video games in addition to board games?

I definitely count myself in that category. I’m a PC gamer, and I predominantly play strategy or management style games. I’ll also mix in some RPGs every once in a while.

Since I’m old now (32 years old) FPS games give me mild motion sickness/headaches so I tend to avoid them. Back in the day I could hold my own in Counterstrike 1.6 or other FPS games from that era.

Currently on my PC I’m playing a fun 4X game called Field of Glory: Empires. I recently finished a play through of Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

What about you guys?

I actually don't play video games. Probably because I didn't grow up with them.

Supporter13 months ago

How did you come up with your user name? It looks like an auto-generated password or something.  What did you do as a kid instead of video games?

Supporter13 months ago

Yeah its auto-generated... I've been trying to figure out how to change it lol. Growing up I did some board games and actually was into sports and being outdoors.

Supporter13 months ago

I did some outdoors stuff and was fairly involved with school and stuff. Honestly can’t imagine not having video games!

I'm sure. There's this whole side of culture which I have very little knowledge or experience in and its odd sometimes.

Supporter13 months ago

And I'm pretty bad at them too

Smash is my jam, and my wife and I play that more than any other video game. Especially since her family lives next door and have a Switch with Smash, so we play with her siblings on occasion.

Supporter13 months ago

Now I have to ask, who do you main?

I started to main Villager with Smash 4. I just looove how he trolls around haha I also play as Lucas. I'd say those two are my main mains, but I like to branch out as well and play with Robin, Corrin, and most recently Incineroar. They're not ranked too high in the tiers, but I have fun with them, and when playing "casual" with my wife's family (my brother-in-law has surpassed casual haha), they're the ones I have the most fun with.

Aww, that’s cool that you live next door to her family! My wife’s parents live in Rochester too, so we get to see them quite often. Really makes life better.

Yeah, that's why we moved here, so we could help out. And it is fun living next door to them. I was iffy about it at first (I mean, who wants to live next door to your in-laws? haha), but it's been super good. Glad we moved here. And I think we're heading up to Rochester fo Thanksgiving! My wife has more family up there.

Supporter13 months ago

Really? No way! I work thanksgiving day and the weekend after but I am off for Black Friday.

Hopefully we'll have some time to meet up! We are getting there early in the week of Thanksgiving, and I'll be working remotely (since that's what I do anyway). I'll have to check with my wife to see what's all planned (it is her family we're going to see, after all), but I have to imagine there'd be at least  some free time haha

Supporter13 months ago

Woahh a meetup of the two giveaway winners! lol I hope it happens

Supporter13 months ago

Free time is an illusion. But let me know when you are around!

I'm a big fan of Super Smash Bros., and was a Smash league on campus during grad school (because I had time for Smash leagues during grad school somehow haha). I also enjoy Fortnite (because it's free to play), but mostly play that with my brother or brother-in-law when they're on. I used to play all the Star Wars games, like X-Wing and TIE Fighter, Rebel Assaults 1 and 2, and the like. I used to be into video games a lot more than I am now, and always loved Zelda games. Still do, if I could find time to play them haha I also love Sid Meier's Civ games, especially 5 and 6. So addicting.

Supporter13 months ago

Of course the Star Wars games! My absolute favorite growing up was the 4X Star Wars Game called Rebellion, just like the name of the FFG board game, which also happens to be my absolute favorite board game.

Zelda, of course. So many fond memories playing Ocarina of Time!

There was a Rebellion game before the FF one? I didn't know that! I'm supposing the two are quite different, since one is 4x. I really want to play the "new" Rebellion. Everyone has such high praise for it. What I really want though is a Zelda-themed game. Sandbox overworld with dungeons and weapons and horses and stuff. I would be ALL OVER that. A cross between Tiny Epic Quest and Western Legends, perhaps.

Supporter13 months ago

If you are a Star Wars fan at all you will love Rebellion. It’s just so stinking cool!

OMG this game sounds amazing. Why hasn’t it happened yet? Is Mage Knight kind of similar to what you were thinking?

I haven't played Mage Knight yet, although I've expressed my interest with my gaming group. They say it's great and are down to playing...only it takes some time to learn, so we need the time haha Having it referenced to this mashup, I'm even more anxious to play!

Supporter13 months ago

I’ve never played mage knight either but it definitely looks like something that we would enjoy. Yet another expensive game to eventually add to the collection, eh?

Which is probably why it won't join the party, so to speak. But, who knows, perhaps when my kids get older I'll be able to justify it...assuming they play with me haha Still got a long time before that'll even be an option though. C'est la vie. :)

Supporter13 months ago

I hear it does have a great solo mode also...

I KNOW! Don't tempt me, Frodo! haha I'm trying to forget that aspect, but it's really hard to do.  What am I even doing with my life anymore...haha

Supporter13 months ago

Well, I used to be pretty heavy on video/PC games but recently not so much after having my first son haha. This is what my "history" looks like:

Middle School - Starcraft a few times a week, lots of GameCube with my older brother (Melee, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, etc), and Final Fantasy 7 and 9

High School - Still lots of GameCube and FF games but started really getting into an FPS (there was a game called Sudden Attack that had a big competitive scene in Korea, similar to Counter Strike)

College - my gaming time dropped dramatically and I played a bit of League of Legends and my roommate's old Kingdom Hearts

Married & Before Baby - played quite a bit of Destiny: Taken King on PS4 but dropped it after a few months. Got a Switch and got to scratch my itch for gaming again through Splatoon. Overcooked with my wife was pretty fun but we both felt that it was too stressful and exhausting haha. Oh, and got to play lots of Smash Ultimate for a while by myself out of nostalgia

After Baby - zero gaming at home; only the occasional Smash Ultimate over at a friend's. Board games all the way, with once a week at a friend's and once a week at home

Not really anymore, the older I get and the more kids I have the more I have to use my gaming time wisely.  I do play Tiger Woods 12 a couple of times a year (usually during Spring Break - I’m a teacher).  I play Civ V a few times a year as well.

Supporter13 months ago

I hear you on that front! Fortunately my gaming PC is up in our bedroom so I can usually game for an hour or two after the kids are in bed. I have a stressful job and I need to disconnect my mind from life sometimes and just Game for a while. Keeps me sane.

Supporter13 months ago

Totally!  Gotta do what you need to get that stress off.  When I don't play board games I watch hockey.  Gotta find what helps you destress.

Supporter13 months ago

Hockey is ok. I used to be a huge NFL fan but while I still enjoy watching football I find that I enjoy it less than I used to. I’m a big Patriots fan.
