Grail Games

Supporter

Grail games, I expect we all have at least one. I while back the question was asked here on this site, what games would you get if price, player count, time..... were no object? My question today is a little bit different. Today I ask, what is your grail game?

Maybe you don't feel the same way that I do, but there are a bunch of games I want, and can afford, but I will not buy them because I don't have the player count for them. Or maybe I don't have the room for them in the case of the recent #Frosthaven campaign. Some of these games I really want, but it is they are not unobtainable, they are just out of my reach in terms of player count or space. If I wanted to I could buy them, and have them. For me a grail game is a game that you want, and one you would play in your current situation. But, for whatever reason, price, OOP, not available in your language, not available where you are..... you can't get it.

For me it's #Twilight Imperium 4th Edition and #Dune

I just know that my group would never be able to commit the time needed to these games, and I think only one or two guys would enjoy the high complexity level.

I would love to play both of these.

I like the question.  #War of the Ring (Second Edition) is one that I had and traded away for those very reasons.  #Frosthaven I will probably attain one day but certainly don't have room for it yet.  I'd likely try out #Joan of Arc if I had the space and payers for it but alas I do not have either nor the money.  #On Mars and Dignogenics probably fit the same categories to a slightly lesser extent.

For me, in addition to #Glory To Rome, I would say....

How do you like the iron clays from Roxley? You do have them with #Brass: Birmingham, don't you?

I do have them! I REALLY like them. I use them as replacement money for almost any game that I play. Concordia, 7 wonders Duel...all replace the money with the Clays lol.

I keep on being tempted by them....

If you have a game that has paper money or even annoying little cardboard money, I would recommend them for sure. They just have a really nice feel to them. and they are super pretty.

Lots of games  under this category for me. I usually play with 2 only since I haven't found a consistent gaming group to play at bigger player counts or simply because their too big/long/too much commitment to be consistently played and like to focus on building a library of games I'm able to play. Games that come to mind would be #War of the Ring (Second Edition), #Gloomhaven, #Joan of Arc, #Hellenica: Story of Greece, #A Song of Ice & Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game: Stark vs Lannister Starter Set. As of others have said, I'd love to play these games but until the environment is right, not own them

#War of the Ring (Second Edition) is another game I would love to play. LOTR is probably my favorite IP of all time.

I think #Lisboa still tops my list, though #Cloudspire might be on there too. Same with #Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan, I have been learning about this and it looks awesome, I just do not think it appeals to the players in my group and especially not my wife lol.

I should have added #Lisboa to my list.

Given these parameters, right now its just #A War of Whispers .  There's plenty of titles I'd like to get to the table but won't be able to until Quarantine is lifted and even then a few I'll struggle to get max player count for, but that's the only one I'd add to my collection presently.

As soon as I think I can get even one other person to play it with me.... I will probably buy it.

#STAR WARS Epic Duels Game for sure. I am aware there is a "reprint" coming up from Restoration Games, but I want the Star Wars one :)

Pretty sure it is #Unmatched: Battle of Legends, Volume One, in which case it is out.

Wow, I am way behind on the times haha Thanks for the heads up!

There are games that I would love to play, but not own, like #Twilight Imperium 4th Edition. I would actually like to own #Gloomhaven some day, but I wouldn't say it's at the top of my list in this criteria. I think the closest one for me is one of the deluxe edition games by Eagle-Gryphon + Lacerda + Ian O'Toole. Likely #Lisboa or #The Gallerist. For all of these, price is the biggest issue. Secondary issues are table space and for some, a very high barrier to entry for my wife to learn the rules.

The one non-Lacerda game that looked very enticing is #Rococo: Deluxe Edition, but I don't think I'd be as interested in the mechanics. Haven't looked into it enough to say for sure though.

My man, if we lived closer Phil I would for sure get a Lacerda game and I know you would be game.

Owner8 months ago

Oh for sure! and I think my wife would really enjoy the Lacerda games, even if both of us might be overwhelmed in the beginning haha

My wife would see the game set up and say..."seriously"?

The setup is one of the things that turns me off. I typically don't mind setup in solo games, and that is probably how I would play #Lisboa. But, man it looks like a lot.

All Vital games are just a lot. A lot of components, a lot of rules, a lot of thinking. They are just a lot. I could get the game to the table maybe once but I doubt it would stick with my group. And yes, solo would be a chore lol, but a beautiful chore.

Owner8 months ago

I'm sure my wife would too, especially once I start teaching her the rules (my gosh it's the hardest thing for me to explain the rules and start seeing her getting drowsy when I'm only half way through my explanation haha)

Oh man the worst. I also am still learning how to teach games effectively...

#Rococo: Deluxe Edition would be mine as well. The art alone is enough!
