Is 3D Catan worth $300? New Version Announced

Catan 3D Components

Catan announced this morning that pre-sales on a refresh of the old Catan 3D is open now for a release in August of this year. The price tag sits at a hefty $300. Since this is basically a high end collector's set, that price does not seem out of the realm of possibility. Is it worth it? Would you buy at this price? Would you buy at a lower price?

Check out the announcement from Catan:

CATAN Studio announces the release of the CATAN 3D Edition this summer. The island of Catan rises up from the table for an immersive game experience like no other. Settlements grow up from fertile grain fields and cities nestle into the sides of majestic mountains. You can almost hear the sheep baa-ing in their pastures.

This long-awaited 3D Edition of the classic CATAN base game is based on terrain tiles that were hand sculpted by the game designer Klaus Teuber himself. All of the terrain is hand painted for stunning color, and intricately designed player pieces are antiqued for a look that is full of history and character.

This is not the first time a 3D version of CATAN has been released. In 2005, a special collector’s 3D edition of what was then called The Settlers of Catan was released. Ever since, the growing popularity and reach of the game has increased fan demand for a new 3D edition.

It can now pre-ordered in the CATAN Shop.

In mind mind there is no point playing Catan unless you can build tiny structures with your, as yet, unused wooden pieces while waiting for your turn. For that reason alone this isn't worth it for me (also I do not have $300).

Now if they did a version with really chunky wooden pieces....

I am with you that a different kind of 3D catan may be better. I have seen some fantastic homemade sets on Etsy.

Looks great, but not for me-too $$$.

I wish I could afford it and I do not even like the game.

I still thoroughly enjoy catan, but $300 is quite steep. The terraforming mars 3d small box suggests a nice 3d version of catan could be done for about half that amount.

That is a good point!

I wish I could dedicate a whole room of my house to Catan and play a lot more. Until then, no, I do not think I have $300 to spend on 3D Catan. I don't mind the cost though, especially if the quality is really good.
