I recently tried playing Root with my group and maybe it was that I wasn't prepared enough or just that it's too much for my group, but when I was going through rules it took over 45 minutes and when we started taking turns I realized that someone didn't even setup their board yet for the Eyrie.
It ended up feeling like a chore for the first half of the game to continue to remind of rules and the Eyrie player seemed pretty disinterested from the beginning.
Afterwards I even found out that I got a rule wrong for the Woodland Alliance.
Overall it wasn't the best playthrough but I'm hoping I can get to play again because I still see where it would be fun once everyone understands it.

It can definitely take a while. I always plan on the first play through a game getting some things wrong. Having said that I prepared more for Root than any other game I’ve taught because I one it would be tough. In want to encourage you to try again because it gets better every time we play it.
I’m almost a little bummed we are going to have 6 at game night this weekend because with 6 Root is way too long

I feel like this is common for a first game of Root. It is a lot of learning for each individual player and especially the teacher of the game.
I have not had a bad debut of a game for my group yet. We typically do some good research before hand. The closest thing I had being a poor first play was Captain Sonar. We got rules wrong and it felt prohibitively limiting.

Getting the rules wrong in any game can be debilitating. I can see Captain Sonar being a hot mess with some misunderstood rules.

It was amplified by the fact that he teacher was not super great...and he was on the other team so we kinda just had to go for it!

Maybe! I am not inclined to seek it out but if it happens I am not opposed.

That’s actually not a bad strategy to have. Some games have so many rules we’re supposed to remember. Unless you play it over and over and over again, there’s bound to be something forgotten, even if it’s not your first play. It happens to me all the time.

I know this isn’t the same but they are releasing a Digital Version soon. I’ve only played the digital version of Scythe. I got it when it was on sale for like 7 bucks. It is nice when I don’t have time to set up a solo game. But it’s still not as good as the physical copy

I think Root was the last one I bombed out on as well. I was thee Eyrie, and it was rough. I went through all my bird leaders because planning is hard. But we all actually ended fairly close to each other in points. If the others had ever played before, I'm sure I would have lost miserably. And yes, I did play one rule wrong for the Eyrie, but at least it was consistent until caught :) I also want to play again because now that we have one game under our belts, thee others should be much, much better. I still enjoyed it though.
We talk about board games here. Games like Codenames, Catan, Root, and all your favorites. Posts can link directly to games and everyone is welcome to join the discussion.

I really carefully pick games for my group to try to avoid this. I think the last one was Eldritch Horror. We learned as we played, got swamped and still played for 4 hours. Wasn't that fun... I want to try again but am thinking of trading it lol
