Ideal game collection size

Supporter

I'm curious if ya'll have an ideal game collection size. Do you just collect games and want all the games? Do you want to maintain a collection of 25 games? Or 50? Or 500?

By collection, I am referring to those games YOU buy and collect. I am not referring to the sorry game that you still play with your parents when they come to visit.

I'm not there. Not even close. But I think my ideal collection size is around 50 games. Not huge huge, but big enough to let me play a different game every week if I so desire.

So, do you have an ideal collection size? If so, what is that size and why?

I have no idea how many we have. I would guess around 300.  I don't have an ideal size, but I do like the idea of fitting them on our game shelves, although we have a lot of overflow right now. hahaha I started loaning some games out to friends to help with that and then I got some loaner games from a friend who moved away for a year.  I can't resist more games though and I also have a hard time parting with old ones!  They are like old friends.  ;-)

One of my local FLGS and a Board Gaming Bar by my house have a pretty extensive library.  This is great for someone like me who doesn't want to buy something to only play once or twice but still wants to try it out.

We're just over 300 at the moment, and I think our ideal number is around 200. I just had an auction and sold a few.

Getting it down by 100 haha, that would be a lot of tough decisions to make for me

The first 50 would be pretty easy, the second 50 would be tougher.

Supporter12 months ago

Well. I guess you could start on the easy 50.

I had 40-something in my recent auction, so I did try.

Wow, that is a good amount.

I'd say for me it's about 30 ish.  I know it'll end up being more.  I think most people who read my posts know that I'm big into playing a game I like over and over.  The more I have the more I have to spread my games out.  Especially because I don't get to gaming as much as I'd like.  I also really pay attention to mechanics when looking at games to add.  If it has a lot of what I already have and especially if I already have a game with the mechanics that I'd like to play again I'll usually stay my hand.

I suppose it could go up and down but I don't have much right now I'd unload, I think this is probably because I try to really be discerning in my purchases.

I think around 50 sounds pretty good for me too. Covers a broad spectrum of game types and mechanisms. I feel like I will have a problem stopping when I get to 50 though. I will definitely need to learn to sell the games that I’m done with.

I try and do the whole Marie Kondo thing, but in a more personal to me way. I have barely over 20 games, but I have purged many games and I look to sell or trade games I have lost interest in! Gotta be able and want to play em!

So do you like your current collection size?

I like the size but I would switch out some other games for new games that align with my preferred play style now! I am much more of a Euro gamer than I was initially.

So you would see your connection is continuing to evolve? You aren't saying it is done, just that is the size you are looking for.

Exactly! Just evolving, not necessarily growing...though it may grow anyway...

I'm at 40 even myself, and I already feel like I have covered pretty much every situation, party, group size, weight, and even mechanics that I regularly see at the table.

I could definitely see adding a bit more and still making sure all of them see the table though. 50 also sounds like a good number to me.

I have some over 1300 books in my personal library. Sometimes that leads to a sort of analysis paralysis when it is time to pick another book to read. I can imagine the same thing happening with a lot of games.

I don't have 1300 books in my library.  But I can tell you, I hate going to book stores because I always end up adding to my growing wish list.  I feel like I read one off my list(s) and add 10 more.

My sister is a huge book collector. She has 2,250 in her personal library right now. It’s a bit nuts.

Supporter12 months ago

Not nuts, surely not nuts. At lest compared to every person on this forum. Lol

Supporter12 months ago

Hey, I know that feeling too..

Supporter12 months ago

Wow that’s awesome.

Supporter12 months ago

1300?? Oh wow, makes me think of Belle falling in love with Beast's library

Supporter12 months ago

Yes. If you are talking library size..... I would say 5000-10000 books would be the ideal family library. I like to read, and I like being surrounded by books.

The more books the better in my opinion haha I have hundreds of books, but thankfully they’re smaller than games.

Supporter12 months ago

They are. But they weigh a lot more on a shelf.

But there are SO MANY good ones! That said, I'm at about 200 and thinking it's much too big. I just don't play everything. I need to sell a lot, but I'm the type of person that hates getting rid of something "just in case" I need it some time haha

Supporter12 months ago

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to sell games from my collection.

It'd be like selling my children. Which, by the way, I haven't done, so you can see my point haha

Supporter12 months ago

I think I could sell some (games that is haha) if I knew I'd not really play them often.
