Let's Talk Storage and Tables

Right now I have all my board games shoved into a closet. Gonna hopefully start looking into creating a board game space once I move out of the place I'm at for college. I want to know the what people are using for storage and even what they're playing on or anything else I can't think of. I'm talking bookshelves, tables, chairs, ladders!!!!! Brands and stores from where to buy them would be cool too. Also pictures if people are feeling brave.

Like many people in the hobby, I use Kallax shelves from IKEA. There are some definite benefits: they're not very expensive, they look clean and minimalist, they fit most games, and there are some flexible options for how you use the cubbies (install drawers, use baskets, or put some blankets down for your cats). It can accommodate vertical and horizontal stacking, or showcasing certain games. The main cons for me are that the square spaces can occasionally be restricting when you have oddly shaped boxes, and it's very possible that you won't be using every square inch available to you because the spaces are also deeper than your average game.

For the majority of my games though, it's great. I'm not planning to amass a hundreds-strong collection, so I don't stress about absolute efficiency of storage. It's sturdier/cleaner than the average bookshelf, and a little more palatable than a heavy duty utility shelf.

I play on a normal table or on the carpet but I have a lot of play mats that my friends have donated from their #Magic: The Gathering tournaments if I ever need them for the table.

Good organization!

Thanks for the response, picture and everything lol. So Kallax is the golden standard then. I think I've seen them mentioned before but people were saying they are not what they used to be. I don't know how long you've had yours but if I'm remembering correctly (and thats a big IF) people were saying the quality for them has started going down.

Nice collection by the way!

I don't know if it's the "gold standard," but it fits games nicely, looks decent, and it's relatively affordable. The premium option would be the BoxThrone shelves.

I've seen a few videos highlighting the BoxThrone shelves and, honestly, I prefer the aesthetic provided by Kallax shelves. The BoxThrone shelves also didn't seem to be as rigid as I would like. It seems the modularity may have affected some of the structural soundness. Just not so sure about them, especially for the price...

Hm, I could see that being an issue. Yeah I truly don't mind the look of my Kallax. The color doesn't match our current place too well, but you can't win 'em all. We got it for free, haha

Wow that's awesome! How did you get it for free?

Someone we knew was getting rid of it just as we were about to get married. So it's secondhand. Let me tell you, you do NOT want to carry an assembled Kallax up a staircase. Thankfully it was only the 2nd floor, but dang that sucked lol

Haha pretty beefy eh? I could do it ;)

I just pre-ordered one of those units when it was on sale for Black Friday. I have no idea when I'll get it or if I made a sound financial decision but yolooo

Definitely let me know because I'm discussing with @NeoprenePlayMatt Kallax vs BoxThrone

No doubt! I have 0 idea when they're going to show up but I'm 100% posting a few pics when they do.

Something about shipping delays across the world, situation being out of our control, and we're doing the best we can, with another reminder that we appreciate your patronage and your patience. And a note about how we would have put more effort into this reply but surely you've seen it enough that we can just generic half-go it

This seems...totally accurate. Thanks so much for the update Clint!

Anytime! Thank you for choosing Golden Bell

Premium User6 months ago

Is the Golden Bell like McDonalds combined with Taco Bell?

No it's a board game publisher with a horrible reputation for being slimy. Never delivering to KS backers (while releasing in retail), holding KS games hostage until backers paid more money, etc etc. You can Google and read all about it if you like

Premium User6 months ago

Gotcha.. but we established you're google, remember?

I'm so glad none of the KS I've backed have run "business" this way
