I do enjoy how Tom has been leaning into this newbie status to hilarious effect

Reminds me that I must go and visit Osprey.

Osprey?

Yes, Undaunted Normandy and the North African expansion come up at the end of the video as the meatier twin to War Chest and Osprey Publishing often have great specials that I don't check out enough. The other month I could have had Judge Dredd The Cursed Earth exceptionally cheaply for a new game (11 quid?) but couldn't easily find the two promo cards...da! False completionist syndrome especially when I love a good The Lost Expedition adventure. I also ogle, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, as I liked the book a lot, enjoyed the TV series and consequently need the game although I am a little tentative as I think Tom Vassel sums up my fears about this game when he says "not fun", oh well.

 Cheers

#War Chest is a pretty good game. Have to agree with the video

Have you played it?

Yeah I own it and have played a few times. To me it feels like a much lighter version of chess.

Nice, do you have a favourite combo of units?

Probably the ensign and berserker or any of the ranged units

Berserker is one I haven't really used yet. I think I had it, but in that particular game I mostly used it to recruit.

Have you found there are some combinations that are practically unbeatable by other specific combinations, or will the better player generally come out on top?

With the caveat that I have only played I think 7 times, which I don't feel is enough to make that call in a game like this (tons of unit combinations, some luck), I think the better player will win more often than not. Again, there is some luck in this one, so it's not 100%, but if the units are drafted, I think it's mostly about the skill of the players. There could be combinations that are just bad together, but I wouldn't say there's a combination we've seen that's just overpowered.

I do know there's a unit that in the expansion they included a new version for. They said they didn't feel it was overpowered in the original version, but that it encouraged one specific play style which then forced a specifc counter play style from the opponent, and they didn't want all the games to be the same if that unit was in play. So it's not exactly what you were asking about, but I thought it was interesting. Here's the BGG post from one of the designers: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2280042/new-royal-guard

That's cool that they just included a change to game play in order to keep things flexible and unexpected. Especially given that it wasn't game breaking.

Yep, fixing the weaker parts of the game. Pretty cool! And if you prefer the original version, you can just use the original card.

Indeed, bravo to them!

I just got it recently and I'm a huge fan so far.

Have you discovered any good troop combinations?

Well so far I've only gotten 4 games in. One combo I really liked was Ensign & Royal Guard. Ensign can command other baby units to move, and Royal Guard can take its losses from the supply rather than from its stack on the board, so you can keep the minimum amount of Royal Guards in the bag and lots of Ensigns and have quite a bit of maneuverability, especially since you the Guard gets to use the Royal Coin. The Royal Guard is pretty tough to remove since it can take its losses from the supply, too. So the extra maneuverability combined with the toughness is a good combo.

Nice, do you get to choose which troops you get or is it always random?

We've done fully random a couple of times, but you're supposed to draft from 8 randomly selected units. It's the best way to go because you can get favorably combos and still have an evenly matched roster.

Gotcha, that's a neat system. Did you feel like you could always get some useful combination of units?

If you draft then yeah

You can also play on https://www.yucata.de/ which is where I have a game currently in progress.

Nice!

Also, in the reddit comments for this video, someone linked this site where you can play the game online: https://warchestonline.com/

That's cool, looks like a game that would play quite well virtually

Yeah I'm sure it would. You miss out on the great components though, haha

That's true, the poker chips do look very satisfying
