Top 5 Solo Games

I asked @Skurvy5 what his top 5 solo games are. So, I thought I should post mine. This is different from my top 5 or 10 games, these are ranked soley on my preference for solo play.

  1. #Spirit Island Such a great game, it can be tough to beat, but it so so so good. I am not really that good at it, but I have such a fun engrossing time each time I play it. I highly recomend it.
  2. #Star Trek: Frontiers This is a retheme of #Mage Knight. If you want a big meaty puzzle game this will deliver in spades. I wish that the components would be better,,,, but you can't have everything.
  3. #Scythe This is my favorite game of all time, but, it is my favorite game because of its multiplayer play. I still love it solo, and If I tried #Scythe: The Rise of Fenris it might bump it up to the number 1 or 2 spot.
  4. #Agricola (Revised Edition) I like this one multiplayer, but I might actually prefer it solo, I love puzzling over the economy and wrestling with my choices, while not feeling bad about taking too much time on my turn.
  5. #Deep Space D-6 This is a solo only game, It is a quick fun light dice placement game. It is not particularly strategic, it is mostly all tactics, but it is a lot of fun. And, it is a great game to bring out when you don't want to take time to set something bigger up, or you don't have the mental energy for something heavier.

BTW this is my 100th post. I have loved my time in this community, and I thank you all for making my time here pleasant. I look forward to continuing to interact here with you all.

Also just an FYI (@philryuh) and everyone else.  #Clans of Caledonia is free on Tabletopia and can be played with the app on a tablet.  It takes a little getting used it but I think it'll be good for someone who wants to play solo (or multiplayer really), especially when they are holding a baby for long hours at night.

philryuh Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

How's the baby doing? :D (Hopefully getting some board game genes/talent by osmosis)

Thanks for the news!

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Man that would be nice.  She just all of a sudden at 4 -5 is like wanting to play games and is a master at it.  Haha.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

I hope the baby is expecting the parents to get all there sleep via osmosis.

Daggumit, Spirit Island is going to my next acquisition, isn't it? I've been leaning toward Scythe for a multiplayer, but if it's really good solo, then that bumps it way up. I haven't played any of these, so it looks like I have my work cut out for me!

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

If you're willing to spend $6-8 extra dollars for the ScytheKick App it is such a great and easy solo experience.

BenjaminK 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

I may. I just discovered I have unused money on my Apple account. So that’s fortunate haha

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

For me the App was an absolute game changer for playing Scythe solo.  I liked it before, but it was a little wonky to run.  With the App I love it.  Plus you can easily up the challenge by adding two or three Automa.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

What a tragedy.

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Oops. Replied in the wrong place. I was trying to respond in a joking manner to @Benjamink discovery of unused funds with which to buy scythe kick.

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Great

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have yet too try that... I really need to get it.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes it is. #Spirit Island recently bumped #Mage Knight out of the #1 spot on the BGG top 200 solo games of all time.

BenjaminK 8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Huh, I didn't know that either! I also didn't realize there was an official BGG ranking for solo games. I'll have to check that out.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/264253/2019-peoples-choice-top-200-solo-games-200-1

It is the peoples choice from the single player guild. They do it every year.

BenjaminK 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lots of good stuff in there! I’m going to have a lot of new games to look into now haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Down that road lies nothing but poverty and fun.

BenjaminK 7 days ago | 1 point[-]

As long as we’re having fun then poverty is just fine.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes sir

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Congrats on the 100th! Time sure flies haha, and thanks for adding so much to this group.

I've been checking out the people's choice for top solo games on BGG. What are some games that have been on your radar for a future purchase?

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Oh.... And #Gaia Project

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Thanks.

Some I've been thinking about and wanting for mostly solo play are.....

#Pax Emancipation

#Friday

#Greenland

#Everdell

#clans of Caledonia

I've also been thinking a lot about #Terraforming Mars for solo play. I wasn't all that excited about the multiplayer game, but, I wonder if I wouldn't like it pretty well solo.

The game(s) I am expecting to pre-order this year are #Pax Renaissance and/or #Pax Pamir (Second Edition). A lot depends on the price for those.

sdirrane Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I want to try TM again.  My friend won it from our FLGS and we only played once and we got it about 25% wrong.  Although I don't know that'd it be my favorite.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Tell your friend I'll double what he paid for it, and cover shipping to my place on Kansas.

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

HAHA!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

You don't think he'd go for that?? What a surprise!!! LOL

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I wonder if I would like TM or not. Definitely not a game I'm on the look out for though, it's not an ideal game for me and my wife. And I know SU&SD's take on games can be surprising, but it was interesting to see how lukewarm they were about it.

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah I mean I think I'd like it more with an Expansion or two but it was decent.  SU&SD isn't the best barometer for me, I don't know if we like the same stuff.  I think they also fall into the Professional trap I mentioned in your Content post.  It's almost like their opinion is hard for me to take because it's based on gaming that I won't get to do/won't understand.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I often don't agree with them, but I can often know whether or not I will like a game based on them. For instance, they gave #scythe a pretty cold review.... I watched it, and new I had to have it.

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

That's a good point, Scythe is in my top 5 and Root is my favorite and they didn't care for either.  I mentioned this in another post but often if Rahdo doesn't like something it usually draws my attention closer since I don't think we are the same type of player.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Rhado is another good example. I can often figure out if I will like a game or not based on his run-throughs.

philryuh Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

@sdirrane @Marshwiggle92 same here, I prefer the runthroughs because by the time the video is over, I know full well if I should go for it or not. I mostly watch SU&SD for entertainment lol

sdirrane Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

They are funny.  But I actually think I prefer NPI for humor.  Although I can't put my finger on to why.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

NPI is good. Bu I still prefer SU&SD.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

They are very funny.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I wonder too if you would like it. You would HATE the production.

philryuh Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Hahaha yeah, I often find use of stock photos very lazy. The little cubes and the logos look great though, and the main map isn't too bad. The custom dual-layered boards look like fantastic upgrades. I do know that Terraforming Mars was mostly a family effort where the design, graphic design/illustrations, and a host of other business items were distributed among their members: https://www.fryxgames.se/fryxgames-story/

Marshwiggle92 Supporter7 days ago | 1 point[-]

Very interesting.... I was not aware of that. Also, Jacob has a beard I can only describe as magnificent.

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

1. #Clans of Caledonia - No Automa to run but you feel like you really get what your looking for from the game.  The only downside is that you are trying to reach different scoring levels so there isn't necessarily like an Automa to beat

2. #Viticulture - Again, easy to set up and easy to run and a great way to get the experience of Viticulture in.  Greatly aided by a BGG user created solo campaign.

3. #Root - The Bots are pretty easy to run and it's a fun experience when you can't get it to the table with a group.  But it's definitely it's own game, compared to multiplayer.  This is my favorite game, but definitely not my favorite solo game.  Having said that I think I'll play plenty of solo this year to get a lot of Root in my life.

4. #Scythe - The first game I purchased that had a solo mode.  It was actually the first game I ever realized had a solo mode.  It was hardish to learn, but now it's pretty easy.  And with the ScytheKick App it's so smooth and easy to run multiple Automa.  It's only down to #4 because I also enjoy the top 3 games more.

5. I want to say #Tiny Epic Tactics, but since I've only played it once I'm going to say it's almost 5.  Out of the games I have left that I can play solo I think Tactics will easily take over the #5 spot once I get it out more.

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

So is Clans your #1 for solo? I'm definitely going to give it a try this weekend! Also, it's great that your top games are also great solo experiences :)

sdirrane Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I think it's because it's the best one at simulating the almost same game experience as the actual game.  And there is no thought behind running it.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

I should try it

sdirrane Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes, yes you should

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

How long does solo play of clans take you?

sdirrane Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

45 minutes tops.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Not bad at all.

sdirrane Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

It's really not.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

How is setup?

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

Clans was the first game and maybe only I will ever bought an insert for.  But it needed it.  There were too many plastic baggies.  With the insert set up and clean up are nothing.  Really easy.  Without them it'd take a while.  I think with set up and tear down it was 45 minutes.  Without the insert I'd probably put the whole process more at about 60 minutes.  Of course I do not struggle with AP at all so that helps.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

That's too bad.

sdirrane Supporter8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I mean it's not too bad.  I've never spent any money on anything extra so $20 one time wasn't a big deal for me.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Congratulations on 100! I've got a long way to go to get there, haha.

Unfortunately I've not played many solo games. I've played #Wingspan and #Everdell solo. Of these, I'm most likely to bring out Everdell again for a solo game. There have definitely been a few solo games that I've considered, one of these being #Nemo's War (Second Edition).

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Thanks,

I would like to try Nemos war.

I might have more posts than you, but I haven't read anything much more interesting than your Dune reports.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Well that is high praise and I appreciate it! I hope to have more in the near future.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I hope so too.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I just need to be careful not to burn my friends out on this game, haha

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Surely it is so good that burning people out on it would be impossible.....

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, well that's how I feel about it! And I think a couple other people feel that way, but not the whole group. Specifically the ones who have not performed particularly well so far...

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Oh dear...

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Haha, I know they'll play again, but I don't think they're quite sold on it as a "we're going to play this for years" type game yet.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Well, I hope for your sake that they do play it for years.

theDL 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Me too, man. Me too.

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

1. #Paladins of the West Kingdom - I think the solo version of this game mimics the multi-player game better than any other solo game I've played;

2. #Wingspan - The Solo is quite a bit more challenging than multi player but teaches you to use your turns wisely and is very easy to run solo with a fairly quick setup

3. #PARKS - Again, this one is also pretty close to the multi-player game experience and due to the near perfect box design very easy to set up.

4. #Robinson Crusoe Adventures on the Cursed Island - Solo is sooooooooooooo hard on this one.  I don't think I've ever won after like 20 or 30 attempts.  At least not the first scenario.  Great game with great experience and you can learn the art of dying, over and over and over....

5. Terraforming Mars - I nearly forgot this one but it is a good experience and I think I played solo with all the corporations.  I think you'd have to exclude Prelude as that might jump start you too fast and make it easy.

Honorable Mentions: #Gloomhaven & #Castles of Mad King Ludwig.  Castles is a great solo puzzle game in the solo version and offers a decent challenge while being slightly, very slightly, less engaging than some of the others above.  Gloomhaven is tough.  If I had to play all my game solo and base my ranking solely on that I'd put Gloomhaven as Number 1.  Easy.  I didn't rank it because I think it's meant to be played multi primarily and not really intended to be solo.  I suppose you could say that for all of them perhaps.

BenjaminK 8 days ago | 1 point[-]

I really like Wingspan solo. Automa is really smooth which helps a ton.  And Terraforming Mars is a fantastic solo game. Plays differently than multiplayer, but still a good puzzle. I've played Castles of Mad King Ludwig multiplayer, and it looks like it would be good solo as well. Thanks for the list!

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have never thought of #Castles of Mad King Ludwig as a solo game. That is cool.

I hear you with gloomhaven, it hurt me to not put Scythe higher, but, in some respects I thought it should be lower.

I really really want to try Robinson Crusoe sometime.

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I would consider Tapestry and Scythe but their footprint is so big I hate pulling them out for solo. Dinosaur isIand is the same way

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I could certainly see that. Tapestry has so many different pieces to setup. All of the different buildings on the player board, and taking out all of the matching landmarks, the cards, the big civ cards, etc..

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I don't mind the footprint. I have thought of setup time in connection with solo games but not footprint.

philryuh Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

For me it's more of the setup time. I like Viticulture because it's little effort in setup but provide satisfying enough gameplay (for me personally). I think I'm too lazy or not invested/interested enough in solo gaming to get there (yet!)

And as for footprint, I started realizing that I really really need a bigger table if I want to play some other games out there lol. Tapestry's footprint is the biggest yet and it just barely fits with one of the player's board right at the edge and the other person's hanging out by an inch or so on the opposite side

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

But, just think, if you were playing solo.... The table would be big enough...

philryuh Supporter9 days ago | 1 point[-]

Lol yes, that is true

WadeB1977 10 days ago | 1 point[-]

I think it largely depends on how long you can leave it out.  I enjoy Sword and Sorcery but have to be able to leave it set up for at least a week to feel like I'm getting enough out of it.

Marshwiggle92 Supporter10 days ago | 1 point[-]

Yes, it is nice when you can leave a game out.
