Questions for Our Next Podcast

BGA

Ok, so Trent is taking a little break from YouTube so that he can focus on building up BGA. And so far, I've been enjoying all of his feature updates, although I do miss the content sometimes.

We're still continuing our podcast though just so that we can continue to have good conversation about the direction for BGA and about games in general :)

With that said, feel free to let us know any questions you have about us, BGA, games, etc. and we'll answer them during the podcast! Thanks.

I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on the newly announced Mariposas and the rise of educational games. Seems like we're getting some good ones, like Wingspan, for instance, and the one about the HK protests (can't remember what it's called). With Mariposas as another, and more out there, it could be an interesting trend. These educational games seem to range from biological science (Wingspan) to current events/social studies (HK Protests), and more.

I like this! Something I've thought about before as well.

Hmm. How educational is Wingspan really? I know it has factual flavor text... but it’s not like it’s teaching anything specific. I guess it’s not not educational.

Haha Sure, perhaps it’s not seeped in science, but it’s scientifically accurate. I think one thing I meant is that how games like Wingspan can promote learning. For example, I caught the birding bug from Wingspan, and I’m sure Mariposas will be similar in nature (maybe?).

Fair point. Anything that can inspire people to learn more and do more is worthy. Even better if it’s an awesome game.

You anyways learn more when learning is fun.

::Insert Star Wars Question here::

1. Who was your favorite Star Wars character growing up and why?

2. What game do you love to play but just can’t seem to get to the table? For me this is Star Wars Rebellion. Amazing game but a beast to get out.

1. You always ask the hard questions.

Supporter10 months ago

That’s why you keep me around!

Would also be funny to put out a podcast talking about games you like but nobody else likes! Haha

Supporter10 months ago

I'll have to think hard about this one hahaha, haven't been in the hobby long enough to know one off the top of my head.

Yeah I was thinking about it too... it’sa hard one!

Maybe Board Game controversies? Not sure what that would look like but maybe touching on topics that have very black and white sides/opinions

Supporter10 months ago

Hmmmm some do come to mind. It would be an interesting talk for sure and Trent and I tend to think quite differently.

I’ve noticed! Plus you guys have different perspectives from one being a long-time game and the other being a newer gamer!

Supporter10 months ago

Their yin and yang perspectives make them a great team I think. We couldn’t ask for a better duo leading the BGA charge.

Oh 100%!

Supporter10 months ago

I think Trent has around 6-12 months on me in terms of time being in the hobby, but he was pretty into MtG for a while until he moved away from it haha

Oh wow I didn’t realize it was that close!

Besides that though, Trent does have the experience of dabbling into design for a few years. He kickstarted three games I believe, and his last one got funded at around $40K (Last Stand). We have another game we worked on together (I did the cardback designs on Ultimate Fighters: Creatures of Titan) but we won't be kickstarting that for a while since we're so busy with BGA lol (it needs refinement in the graphic design side of things but the gameplay is solid with lots of playtesting). Anyway, just thought I'd mention that to give you an idea of Trent's background in board games.

What is the ultimate goal for BGA? Is it to rival BGG or just be an alternative site that does other things (like the game price comparisons) extremely well?

Supporter10 months ago

Good question!

Also how the heck are you able to do the giveaway? Donor? Just out of the kindness of your heart?

Supporter10 months ago

It’s smart marketing! Builds a real and lasting group.

Supporter10 months ago

Small marketing budget. It feels better than paying for ads on facebook and our most active contributors get rewarded! It feels like a win win!

Not to mention I feel like it builds a stronger following rather than just click bait for a weeks worth of activity

Supporter10 months ago

That is smart.

Honestly that is a really really smart idea especially for a social community. Then you can do self-promotion through Youtube, BGG and Reddit.

@Mashwiggle92 @nealkfrank - plus it's just really fun to give away games. In the future, I'd love to do ones where we can give away a game signed by the designer or include a game-related exclusive sketch signed by the artist.

Supporter10 months ago

That would be cool.
