Do upvotes matter on BGA?

This is a question for @trentellingsen and @philryuh, I guess. Do upvotes play a role in sorting of hot posts or comments, like they do on reddit?

Just curious.

Ah, good question. I'll go into a bit more detail in case there are those who aren't familiar with upvoting and this kind of model. I will also use this as an opportunity to share some of my thoughts and to hear out everyone's thoughts:

  • As you mentioned, it's similar to reddit where you upvote a content (post or comment) that you like. Difference is that we don't have downvoting.
  • The way sorting works for hot posts is that every post has a score associated with it based on time of post and number of upvotes. A post will rise to the top as it gets more upvotes, but the longer the time elapsed since its post, the less impact the number of upvotes will have in its "staying power". For instance, the top most reddit posts will manage to stay on the front page for several days with thousands of upvotes, but time soon overtakes it and drops to the bottom as fresh content takes over.
  • On reddit, downvoting is primarily used to communicate something you don't like (inappropriate/disrespectful behavior, an idea you reject, self-promo content, the style or quality of content, etc). It's also widely used as a form of self-moderation and to a lesser extent, a form of gatekeeping, where many users like to "curate" what stays on the front page. While downvoting has benefits of self-moderation by the community to bury content that isn't appropriate, it can also introduce unhealthy dynamics.
  • For BGA, we made a choice to not include downvoting, but this will also have pros and cons. For instance, it's highly appealing for a content creator to get their content on the front page of reddit (high traffic). So it's a common issue where some users will make multiple accounts to upvote their own post. Reddit community is able to counteract this with downvotes, but that won't be possible on BGA. It's something for us to think about for the future, because I'd hate to see some kind of an upvote war trying to curate the front page, that upvotes hold zero meaning.
  • On BGA, you also earn gold for every upvote on your post/comment. Currently, gold is only used to get new avatars, but in the future, I want to expand the shop to allow more user profile customization options.

Cool, thanks for the breakdown, Phil!

That is helpful.

I'll probably mention it again tomorrow..... But I think it would be cool to have a sort by upvote added to the sort feature.

That would be cool. In a post, sorting by top comments, and in the forums, sorting by top posts in the last day/week/month/year/all time like you can on Reddit? That what you mean?

Supporter9 months ago

It could be that way. I was thinking just in tune forum.

Huh never noticed we could vote up on posts. Is it like swiping left or right?

Yeah it's not super visible tbh. But you can vote on posts and comments. Upvotes only, no downvotes.

It is a arrow on the upper left hand side of a post or comment.

I am curious about this too, I see that it can be used to get avatars but I don’t see much else?

Oh really? Didn't even know that.

Yes, I think they contribute to gold... And, maybe experience... Maybe.... Not sure.

I'll upvote this post for such a good question.
