What is your favorite card game?

There is nothing better than having your brain melted by a solid board game, but sometimes you might want to keep your brain intact or you just dont have the time to play a 1-3 hour game. Sometimes it is refreshing to just pull out a small box game that is just a deck of cards and play a game in under 10-20 minutes.

Do you have any card games that appeal to when time does not allow for brain-melting? Or do absolutely dispise small-medium card games?

Rule for this post: Game must only have a max of 1 component other than the cards. 2 or more components can be considered "honorary mentions" lol

Card games aren't my best category, but I just tried #Truffle Shuffle at a friend's house and it was really good!  My wife loves card games, so I'll follow this thread, but some others we have that we like are #Biblios, #Diamonds, #Skull King, #Illusion, #Sprawlopolis, #6 Nimmt!, #No Thanks!, #Lost Cities, #7 Wonders Duel and just got #Jaipur.

I have played most of those, all fantastic! #Skull King is underrated. I think it should be far more popular than it is.

What do you like about it?

Just takes generic trick-taking games to the next level, the pirate/Skull King/mermaid cards are fun when you have them and trying to guess how many hands you will win is a fun challenge.

Totally forgot about #Biblios! Just got this from one of my Secret Santas and I LOVE it.

its a small box right?

Not card game box small but on the small side yes. And the best part is it has a magnetic strip of sorts so it clasps shut!

Neat! I have heard a lot of good things about it!

I second #Diamonds and #6 Nimmt!

I would also recommend:

  1. #The Fox in the Forest
  2. #Bohnanza
  3. #Silver & Gold
  4. #Arboretum
  5. #High Society
  6. #Point Salad
  7. #For Sale
  8. #Love Letter
  9. #The Mind
  10. #12 Days
  11. #Sushi Go Party!
  12. #The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine (Maybe an Honorable Mention - depending on how you want to count the component list)

As you can see I love card games ;)

Dude card game are like the fun knick-knacks of board games! lol little boxes that have so much going on(usually)! Theres a ton here I want to try. How do you like Silver and Gold and Fox in the forest??

I really like Silver and Gold.  Its quick, easy to teach and play, and still allows for non-gaming conversation to happen while you play.  Quickly becoming a favorite of my wife's family.  We played a couple of weeks ago when they were over for dinner.

I love Fox in the Forest but I'm also a big fan of trick taking games.  The games play quick (~20 min).  I usually end up playing a best of 3 series when I play.  The special powers on the odd numbered cards is the most difficult part of some people to wrap their head around and makes the game a little harder to teach.  There is a lot of depth to this game that I really enjoy.

Silver and Gold is great! It's becoming one of our go to's when we want to play something but don't want to have it be too heavy. Always wanted to try #Bohnanza too. Just never got around to it

thats good to know, wasnt really sure if it was worth it

#Bohnanza is great.  I highly recommend especially if you like negation/trading games.  My boys usually drive my BIL nuts cause they will just give away the cards from their hands that don't fit their fields what they want to do.  Drives him nuts, but they usually score pretty well cause they are maximizing each of their fields.  We never play just one game.

Hahaha I guess that is a strategy! Yeah we love negotiation and trading games. Particularly #Chinatown

yeah if you like those, youd like #Bohnanza!

Well these have been on my radar for awhile... may just have to pull the trigger now...

I read the title of your post, and I thought, "ooh I got some ideas...." But, now I am not sure how good ideas I have. So many of the games I thought of don't quite fit your critieria, either they have too many components or cards: Pax games, #Race for the Galaxy, #Dominion: Second Edition. Or, maybe they are too long like #Innovation or #Impulse.

So, my pics are:

#Lost Cities

#CIV: Carta Impera Victoria

I caved and asked my fiancée to pick me up Innovation for Christmas. Really excited to give it a try!

I hope that works well for you. It is a slightly divisive game. But I love it.

Me too! I'm a little worried as I played once on BGA and didn't really grasp what was happening. I'm sure if I had time to read the cards and not feel like I was getting penalized like I do on BGA, it would be a lot smoother.

fingers crossed
