Top 100 Popular Board Games of 2020 So Far - Most Viewed and Bought

Here are the most popular board games of 2020 so far.

Background

The first list is based on our traffic data and the second list is based on our Amazon affiliate sales. To keep things simple for the second list, I excluded affiliate sales from stores such as Game Nerdz, Coolstuff Inc, Miniature Market, and many others.

There are several things you should keep in mind as you look at the two lists:

  • Biggest climbers - These games typically fall under three categories: (1) released late in the year and gained massive traction in the following year, or (2) it got highlighted on a popular YouTuber's content after being under the radar ever since its release (and to be honest, it'll probably be Shut Up & Sit Down—I know from doing extensive research early this year)
  • New editions - Some games climbed significantly as a result of having a new edition released (e.g. Camel Up and Sheriff of Nottingham)
  • Top most purchased games list cut off at 50 - I thought about making it go up to 100, but the differences were starting to get too granular so I cut it off at 50. That's what I get for not spending the time to grab non-Amazon data!
  • Popular purchases indicate focus on accessibility - easier to teach, lighter games seem to dominate the list
  • Disparity between most viewed vs. most purchased - Many of the most popular games (e.g. #Wingspan, #Gloomhaven, #Root) show consistency in how frequently they are purchased as well. And then you have evergreen titles like #Sushi Go! that very few people would search for, but when they do, they're likely there with the intent to buy right away
  • Pro tip: If you hover over the game title on desktop, you'll get a preview of basic info on that game. You could also just click through to get to the game page

With that out of the way, here are the lists.

oh these are dangerous lists for the G.A.S.

(Game ecquisition Syndrome)

guitarists use the term GAS too, although the G is for Gear.

Owner52 days ago

Lists are always dangerous! Love looking at them though, so I really enjoyed back when we did the Weekly Challenge having everyone share theirs

The video is so... mesmerizing to watch...

Glad you enjoyed it! :D

Interesting to see my favourite game #Brass: Birmingham be the 4th most viewed game, but nowhere to be seen on the list of bought games? I wonder if people are looking into it and noping out for some reason.

#The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine is absolutely bossing it. I look forward to the second installment in that series which they announced recently:

#Brass: Birmingham has been almost perpetually out of print since it became available, at least in my experience. I also think there's a decent number of people who are after the Kickstarter edition only because of those yummy chips.

Edit: sold out, not exactly out of print

Owner52 days ago

Yup, it's only been available through Roxley's website for a while now (even that was sold out for a long time too). They have retail ($65) and deluxe editions ($80) in stock: https://roxley.com/products/brass-birmingham-deluxe-edition

Good thing I got in early :)

Owner52 days ago

Yeah, as I mentioned in my reply down below, #Brass: Birmingham has been hard to find. Frequently goes out of stock but it's been available on Roxley's website for a while now: https://roxley.com/products/brass-birmingham-deluxe-edition

#Nemesis is the most viewed game but it's not in the 50 most bought game. I guess the price tag has something to do with this...

Owner52 days ago

It's likely due to it being out of stock ever since SUSD's review. I think it came back in stock this month, but you're right, it's also super expensive! I actually got two copies so that we can give them away.

I know that #Brass: Birmingham has struggled with availability. I would assume that is a big reason that it hasn't been bought more frequently.

Premium User54 days ago

"Bossing it" may be my favorite phrase from you lol. I can attest to being one of those people clicking into#Brass: Birmingham then noping out of it.

Supporter43 days ago

Nemesis is pretty big... I'd love to get my hands in it

So many on my wishlist...

I have seen some review but none of them give #The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth a glowing review. How come it's that high on the bought list? (it doesn't even appear on 100 popular one)

Well known franchise sells well. Would be my guess.

Amazing to still see #Viticulture: Essential Edition so high in the sales list, considering that it was released 5 years ago, and the original version even longer ago than that. It's not exactly a cheap game in the vein of #Sushi Go!, and much more of a hobby game!

Premium User53 days ago

I love lists!  These are super interesting but of course I end up wondering how to take in to account things like cost when considering purchased items or what would be the impact of creating a new inexpensive game that required very little rules lookup and most people searched for once and then bought it and never searched again.  Where would that show up on the list?

In the end it doesn't really matter.  As long as you know the method behind the list it's all good. :)

Wow I'm actually surprised with how much people are loving The Crew. Enjoyed playing with my group but would not expect that it would be that high up.

Excited to see some older games like #Splendor, #Sushi Go! and #Hanabi still on the "bought" list despite being pretty light and several years old. I've seen them be picked up by non-hobbyist friends and I think those games are well on their way to being considered as classic and mass-market as #Monopoly and #Catan.

Thanks for the list Phil, I enjoy looking it over.
