I got to play Captain Sonar!

Gameplay

As the title says, I got to play Captain Sonar. I managed to convince my boss to buy it for the company. I got 8 people interested in playing, found a date that worked for everyone, and had them all watch a how to play video before the date arrived. By the way, this is the best strategy if you're planning to play a game in a limited window, such as a lunch hour, and you know who all of the players will be. It saves so much teaching time, and you can leave a few minutes before the game for questions.

I played as a captain, and I and the other captain assigned teams and roles the day before to save even more time, and so that people knew what they were doing beforehand. So with 5 or 10 minutes of pregame discussion, we played!

The first game lasted about 25 minutes, with our team winning. We actually only landed one hit, a direct torpedo hit. This does 2 damage, and you lose if you take 4 damage, but the other team had taken 2 damage from system failures during the game.

The second game took MAYBE 7 minutes, with the other team finding us and sinking us in no time. They landed 2 direct torpedo hits in quick succession, as we couldn't recover or escape fast enough after the first.

The third game probably lasted 10 minutes, with us sinking the other sub. They actually landed 2 indirect torpedo hits (1 damage each) on us before we hit them at all, but our radio operator quickly found their position, and we landed to hits in quick succession, just like they did to us in the previous game.

The game is kinda stressful, but a ton of fun! It's not easy to get to the table, but if you have the opportunity, try it!

This sounds like a great company game.

This would be SO much better than most team building I've done!

And pretty affordable, compared to sending the team out somewhere for mini-golf and wings or something like that, haha

I have yet to convince them to try paintball.  <quietly preps powered hopper and custom barrel>

Haha, this seems like it would be an easier sell than paintball, although it has a limited number of participants.

All the best team building I've participated in has been game related. But none of it has been board game related.

Here's a perfect opportunity!

I guess. Maybe..... I'll need to try it when I move back to the states, whenever that is.

Yep, it could actually be a pretty good team-building exercise if someone wanted it to be.

That's what I was thinking of as well. I wonder how it would work in a classroom?

It might work well if you had kids that were able to pay attention and stay on task. High schoolers could do it for sure, if they set their minds to it (not always a given, having been a high schooler, lol).

Lol

Wow, great job organizing everything! How did your co-workers feel about the game afterward?

As far as I could tell, they all had a blast! Not sure when we'll play again, but I'm pretty sure they'll all be interested! I think we may have even gotten a few others interested as well, haha.

That's awesome :)

Did this make you think of another game to try out next time?

Haha, nope, I think we'll stick with what we have for a while. Plus I'm always bringing in my games, haha.

Captain Sonar is one of my favorites! I love real-time games, and this one is one of the best I've played. You do have to play with the right group, though. While all the roles are fun and stressful, nothing compares to the role of captain haha Glad you like it! I'd love to own this one day, but doubt I'd have the people to play with.

Yeah the captain was quite stressful, haha. Engineer seems pretty stressful too, lol. We purposely assigned those roles to more experienced gamers in the group.

Supporter9 months ago

Yeah. Finding enough people to play this would be the struggle. I have no doubt that it would be an awesome time though!

Yeah it's pretty great for a work setting like this, where there are just people around and you basically just need to find 7 that are interested. I don't think owning this one would be worth it unless you held regular game nights where you had at least 8 people, which doesn't seem very common.

Supporter9 months ago

The reason I will probably never own this.

Yep. I never will either. It was one of those games I always looked at and said "maybe someday" since I knew it would never get played if I owned it. Luckily my boss likes playing games at work too, haha.

Having a boss like that is a great blessing.

I do not take it for granted!

Glad to hear that.
