Clank! vs. The Quest for El Dorado - Which Game is Better?
7 votes
Based on your experience with the two games, or based on your first impressions, which one is the better game for you? I wanted to start this thread (and other similar ones in the future) to create some interesting discussions.
Here's a breakdown of these two highly regarded deck-building games:
#Clank! A Deck-Building Adventure
- Overall Rank: #36
- Players: 2-4
- Playtime: 30-60 minutes
- Year Published: 2012
- Description: "Burgle your way to adventure in Clank!, the new deck-building board game. Sneak into an angry dragon's mountain lair to steal precious artifacts. Delve deeper to find more valuable loot. Acquire cards for your deck and watch your thievish abilities grow. Be quick and be quiet. One false-step and --CLANK! Each careless sound draws the attention of the dragon, and each artifact stolen increases its rage. You can only enjoy your plunder if you make it out of the depths alive!"
- Overall Rank: #129
- Players: 2-4
- Playtime: 30-60 minutes
- Year Published: 2017
- Description: "Will you dare to search for the golden city? Assemble your expedition and lead it through the jungles of South America in this deck-building board game. You need to have a good plan, expert explorers, and the right equipment. Will you choose the scout, the photographer, or the prop plane? It is up to you to find the best route through the wilderness with your team and to win the race to El Dorado! Every route is a new challenge. Every game needs a new strategy!"
These two games are often compared with one another because they're relatively simple deck-builders with an adventure theme. And while #Clank! A Deck-Building Adventure is a press your luck dungeon crawler with tons of different cards, you have #The Quest for El Dorado that's a full on race to the finish line and comes with a modular board to create many different configurations. So there you have it--which is a better game for you?
For those who have played either of these games, it'd be great if you could give us a quick rundown of your thoughts on these aspects: production, theme, deck-buidling, gameplay experience, replay value and quality of expansions. Also, feel free to throw in another game if you think it easily outclasses both!

I own and have played several times both. While I enjoy the vast array of cards of Clank and push-yout-luck tension, I think that El Dorado is the better game. It's incredibly economical on game components yet it manages to create a magnificient game experience.

I haven't played either, but, I am more drawn to Quest because of the theme.

I have not played either but I see Clank being the game closer to my preferences. El Dorado seems like it can play out fairly similarly each game, it is hard to overtake the leader, etc.
Clank Legacy and In Space appeal to me more than the original though. I have heard they fixed some issues with the newer editions.

Clank! Is an all time favorite for us. While I’m very interested in The Quest for El Dorado, I don’t see it being able to dethrone Clank in our group.

I have not played either of these, so I won't vote, I just have a side comment - every time I see Clank, I think about the Ratchet & Clank game series, so my brain thinks it's a sci-fi/robot themed game, even though I know it's not. LOL

It's sci-fi themed so there are critters and robots in the mix. :)

I haven t played any of these either, but the theme of The Quest for El Dorado feels a bit closer to me, so I think I ll give that a try sooner than Clank! :)
