How are your board game related new year resolutions going?

Owner

I've been quieter than usual this past couple of days because I had to make a family trip. Trying to catch up on everyone's posts now and seeing some interesting news like the one posted about the upcoming #Circadians: Chaos Order. And sorry if I haven't responded to some of your comments or DM's yet! I had 150+ notifications and accidentally cleared them out by refreshing the page 🙃

Anyway, how's everyone doing so far with your board gaming related resolutions? Did you have a target budget in mind for your 2021 purchases? Wanted to get in more gaming time or get in more plays for the games you own rather than buying tons of new games? I'm curious how it's going!

For me, I mentioned before that my primary goals are

1. Keeping a budget of ~$350 for 2021 purchases

That "~" already isn't a good sign!

~$110: I've purchased #Star Wars: Rebellion and its expansion so far. It's a 2020 purchase but I "borrowed" from my 2021 budget so that I could keep within my 2020 bugdget. That's another strike in terms of how shaky my commitment looks for 2021 and that amount is a big hit on the budget 😆

~$60: I'll hit my first big hurdle in late Feburary when #Root: Militants Expansion hits Kickstarter. At this point I'm 100% on backing the new expansion, but there might be other pledge levels that will be tough to say no to. The price estimate is based on #Root: The Underworld Expansion's Kickstarter.

As some of you know, I've been wanting to buy #Too Many Bones this year but (1) finances are tight at the moment so that seems unlikely for a while, and (2) I really don't want to get it until I start making headway on my resolution #2.

~$100: This is my estimate for #John Company (Second Edition)'s Kickstarter for the base game + metal coins + shipping. Seems like Wehrlegig is trying to go for a similar production quality and price point as #Pax Pamir (Second Edition). I'm still doing homework to find out whether the solo experience alone will make this purchase worthwhile because if it isn't, I'll drop this from my list. And if it comes to a point of whether I should get this vs. Too Many Bones, I'll definitely go for TMB. Although... if John Company manages to reach Pax Pamir's level of Kickstarter success, it'll be hard to get for a long time.

2. Getting 3-5 plays in for each of my favorite solo games before I buy #Too Many Bones

This has been tough :(

There are always tons of things to do for Board Game Atlas and there's been family related matters to take care of. There's time, but when I have too much stuff on my mind, I tend to default to lazy mode and watch stuff on YouTube. The only table I can use also has a bunch of items I always to need to clear off first, so that doesn't help either. I really enjoy my solo sessions when they happen but need zero friction to get there haha

Well, it's early, but so far so good.

Main goal is to play every game own, with the sub goal of teaching my kids how to play them.

Secondary goal is to not buy any new games. (for myself, I've already bought two as gifts)

Play every game you own? How many games is that? 😮

Premium User11 months ago

about 115. There some kid games in there, we can knock those all out in a weekend if i wanted to. Then there's party games, hopefully only a feew more month until I can start breaking those out. It's the longer, midweight,  strategy games that will be difficult to fit in.

Playing every game you own, I like that.

My resolution is to play lots of games and have fun doing so.  When I'm not having fun take a break for a while and do something else.

So far so good. :)

What do you usually opt for when you have those downtimes away from board games?

I paint miniatures, paint and build models, play video games of all kinds, DM a D&D game, and do some reading as well.

Lots of hobbies!

So far so good... but mostly because the #Root and #John Company (Second Edition) haven't hit KS yet.  But last year (thanks to some clutch giveaway wins) I was able to stay in my limits.

Been playing games too which is big for me... and logging them.

Once we increase our budget, we'll run some more giveaways and it'll be your time to make some clutch comments again lol. John Company 2E's going to be the death of me because I have no doubt it'll look awesome. Root I already know I'll be going for.

Nice.  This might be important for me since I just added #Cowboy Bebop: Space Serenade to my wish/research list.

I am impressed by your willpower! Bu yes of course the giveaway wins help :) Are you trying to again only buy one game?

Supporter11 months ago

Thanks.  And yes, my goal is one game and one expansion, which will most likely be the forementioned.  The giveaways helped a lot.  I really feel very good about my collection and the amount of "miles" I can get from it.  I don't really have anything on my Wishlist right now. #Inis is still appealing but I don't feel like I need it.

I love it. Having a tight collection full of only games you love is basically my end goal, as well. I'm not limiting myself in terms of number of purchases, but I know it will be fewer than I purchased in 2020.

Also, sorry to be that guy, but I now have 2x 2-player games and 1x 3-player game in of #Inis, and I love it. I can't wait to get some plays in at 4-5 players, or even more at 3.

I've basically busted my resolution. 😅 My resolution was to back less on Kickstarter. After backing 186 campaigns  in 2020 (40 of them weren't board games or RPGs) I said I would only back the big miniature games or ones the exclusive to Kickstarter.

I have backed #Darwin's Journey, #Pingyao: First Chinese Banks, and #Carnegie already.

I mean, if you only back 3 in January, you're still on a pace for fewer than 186 by a longshot.

Oh, it's not just 3! That doesn't include the Dice Tower campaign, Alba (a game book), #Primal: The Awakening, #Fallen Land 2nd Edition Big Box & Descendants Expansion, #Tarawa 1943, TinkerTurf 2.1, an Owlbear plush of all the stupid things (I used ot play a lot of D&D so...), #Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Collector's Edition, and the Origins Game Table.

So yeah... resolution failed.

On the bright side, there isn't anything I know of in the first half of February that I'm interested in. The #Rome & Roll: Gladiators expansion is coming 2/22.

Haha, oh boy. Ok I've seen shots of parts of your shelves before, but can you post a few pics of your whole collection??

Just understand it's an absolute mess! I'm waiting on IKEA to deliver 18' worth of Ivar shelving which will clean most if not all of this up.

And this doesn't include anything from my "hobby room" where I have all my miniatures games like Warhammer, etc.

I got my Ivarshelves in so my overlfow shelf is ready to go. Been workingon fillign it for two days now because I was dumb and decided to reoranize all 400+ of my games instead of just talking stuff to the overflow.

Moderator Level 111 months ago

Haha, that is a bit of a mess, but what an impressive collection! And this is not your hobby room?!

Haha, no. Funny story about that. There's a guest bedroom in the basement and when we moved to this house I took it over as my hobby room for doing miniatures. I even put up stuff in the attached bathroom so I could spray paint in there during the winter and fall. The rest of the finished basement wasn't being used. My wife didn't like goign down there but she also complained about the idea of that being "my space". Well, slowly, over time, I kept moving more and more stuff in there. Put up a TV, a playstation, new home theater seating, gaming table, and soon shelves for games, a pinball... it's mine now. It was a war of attrition. :P

If you ever need someone to play let me know. I'm local to the Cincy area myself.
