Per request, I posted video of my brief overview of each clan with a few thoughts on each. I am a simple man...so simple thoughts.  I thought it might be fun to show off the bling I have for Clans as it's prehaps (next to Scythe) my most blinged game.

Nice video. It's definitely got me interested in checking out this game a little more as I'm pretty unfamiliar with it. The "fans also like" section of BGG for Clans is full of games I like so that alone seems promising. I know you mentioned you got your copy in a trade but I was just curious what usually causes you to bling out games?

#Clans of Caledonia is rock solid and has been in my top 5 (and I anticipate will stat there for a long time).  I highly recommend it.

I plan on doing some serious research because it was like that fans also like page was tailored to me haha. Only because it's how I usually play, does it work well at 2 players?

I'd say yes (even though I've only played it either solo or at 4P).  However, I know loves this game and he plays primarily as 2P.

It does have a variant for 2P to tighten up the map a bit that I think I'd play with if I played it at 2P.  What do you think ?

Variant meaning like something the rulebook has you change or is this something unofficial? Sorry if I sound like a noob, I know nothing lol

Supporter52 days ago

Don't sweat it as it can mean both things (official in the rules, or a fan made unofficial variant).  In this case I believe that the adding cities variant to tighten up the map is officially part of the rules.  The not using the border spaces is 100% part of the official rules.  That's not even a variant it's in the main rule set for 1-2 player games.

Ooh and it has a solo mode? This just keeps getting better and better! It might just become the game I get if I win another giveaway haha

It's a really great solo mode (in my opinion) as well.  Although I'm not usually one for beat your score solos, it works well with #Clans of Caledonia.  I think found an unofficial solo variant that simulates another player.  Not sure if he has tried it yet.  I haven't.

With 2p you don't use the outer, shaded spots, and the markets are in a different spot, which works to shrink the board a bit.

Supporter52 days ago

Can't you also use the port tlles on the city side to take up spaces in the middle of the board?

Partner52 days ago

Possibly, but we haven't tried that.

We've played #Clans of Caledonia 28 times, all but one of those was 2p.

I like metal coins. They are just fun. Mostly if it's a game I like a lot and will see the table quite a bit. So Scythe gets the most game nights of any game and I think having the encounter tokens, metal coins, and part upgrades makes the game a little more tactile and enjoyable for all players.

A game like Wingspan already has good parts and even though we play it all the time I don't see upgrades adding much to the experience.  Every once in a while there's a game like Anachrony that feeling like the upgrade is necessary (Exosuit Commander Pack)...it's not really necessary...but might be the singular best upgrade I can think of.

If I had a lot of extra cash lying around I'd definitely be picking up all the metal coins.  I love the feel of them when I'm playing a game.  I think since you handle the money so much in Clans I'd really enjoy them in that game.

I agree with you re Wingspan. A guy in my group bought all these custom bird markers to use in place of the action cubes and I just asked why lol. I can see coins being a worthwhile upgrade for most games that use them
