Viticulture Essential Edition - 2nd Play With My Wife

Gameplay

Reporting in after our second play!

My wife found this game so delightful after our first play that she's been down to play whenever there's time. We played on Friday night and managed to play a slightly faster game than the first one (our first game lasted a little longer than 2 hours which included rule explanation and we even had to reduce the end goal VP to be 10 instead of the usual 20. The second game took a little less than 2 hours but we managed to stick with the 20 VP goal, so I'd say that's a big improvement). Here are some more highlights:

  • We didn't have Alexa choose the music this time, instead we tried out the Melodice link on the BGA game page!
  • Last time, I intentionally didn't go for some action spaces every now and then whenever I thought she'd really need it for that season (see my previous post to know why I should've minded my own business lol). This time, I played normally.
  • The first 3-5 years went by super fast and it was mostly our "engine-building" phase with the majority of the actions happening in the Summer and retiring our workers early.
  • We had a very different approach--I built almost all of my structures by the fourth year or so and was prepped to start making some good quality wine. My wife focused on maxing out the number of her workers (hence the attached image) and had 2-3 workers more than me depending on her choice of her wake-up time in Spring.
  • The years after that had each of us scoring VP's left and right through fulfilling orders and using visitor cards. There were numerous years when my wife had a big smile of satisfaction on her face as she dominated the board with her massive "army" as soon as I was done for the season.
  • My goodness, I've always had bad vine card draws in my past plays, but for the first time ever, my vineyard flourished with red grapes.
  • I managed to fulfill (I think) my first ever order that had a crystal wine. Also felt proud of my wife who ended up fulfilling 3-4 orders and one of them requiring a blush wine too :)
  • The game came down to the wire once again and I ended up winning with 25-23! We're definitely getting Tuscany soon.

I've wanted to play this for quite a while now. I should see if my friend that owns it would like to teach us next time we're over. It seems like a game my wife and I would really enjoy.

Such a fantastic game! I should check out Tuscany as well.

Yes! As they say, it's a game changer :)

Awesome!  Glad you had a great second game.  And I can't wait to see what you think of Tuscany.  I love the improvements it makes (including helping mitigate bad vine draws).  You should also look into Rhine Valley (helps you really focus on winning with your engine and with filling orders).  For me that fills out the game.  I didn't get the Moor cards because they didn't do anything to change the experience.

I loved it when I tried Tuscany with Trent and the others back in December. It was amazing having the option to mitigate my neverending bad luck getting red grapes by trading for another resource. I was also dazzled by the changes in the wake-up/retire mechanic because it made every wakeup time viable while adding in depth to the strategy by needing to be aware of how other players are managing their workers as the seasons progress. Let's just say that having played the base game helped me appreciate Tuscany immensely more :)

After getting our own copy of Tuscany, I'll likely go for the Rhine Valley cards in the near future.

Awesome!  Yeah I still play the base game sometimes.  Especially as a teaching game.  It has great value.  I tried to teach a whole new group using Tuscany.  I don't think I'd do that again.  If I have more than 1 new player (assuming they are already into the hobby) I'll teach with Tuscany.

Sounds like a great time. I will have to get this game eventually as I think it would be a hot with my wife as well. She likes engine building and I think she likes worker placement.

Nice! I'll look forward to when it happens. Which games have been a hit with her?

Edit: Everdell is one of them, right?

Yeah Everdell is one. She also is a big fan of Wingspan and Century: Golem Edition.

Great. I am so glad to hear that that is working out well for you.

Thanks! :) It's been strange but awesome how boardgaming has becoming more and more of a normal thing for our family.
