Unexpected Game Investments

I really don't collect games for their dollar value but occasionally I'm surprised by what some of my games are worth be it from a company going out of business or from first print runs that never got another. Do you have any happy but unexpected board game investments?

I think #A Few Acres of Snow is out of print.  I almost sold it once on Amazon for like $100 (I originally paid $34 for it).

Too bad... I gave mine away...

Shame. There go your billions of dollars!

I know.

No I sadly don’t have any valuable board games.

I do own quite a few rare Star Wars Legos though! Some are worth a decent price.

That's still pretty cool. I remember those sets but we were into others

All my Star Wars LEGO got mixed with all our other stuff. The only one I still have in tact is ye auld snowspeeder. Such a wonderful set that was!

There have been multiple snowspeeders over the years, but I’m willing to bet we have the same one.

I bet we do too haha mine was...late 90s? Somewhere around there.

I've run into this with some of the Gamecube games I own but not with board games yet. It sure is a nice surprise when you find out though. Do you mind sharing which games you have that are worth quite a lot now?

But on the other side, I gave away a new copy of Batman Love Letter which apparently sells for $80 these days... so...

Supporter9 months ago

I did that as well.

It's like the moment when you realize you should've kept your old gameboy. Or nintendo games. Or pokemon cards. Etc..

Edit: Now, along this line, do you think there are any indicators of a future goldmine? Is there a way to tell an underappreciated game before all of the hype kicks in?

Supporter9 months ago

So true!

I really think that its not the new games before hype kicks in. Its the games that have been around for a minute and companies are deciding to not print more or are closing down. I wonder if some of the lines that FFG is discontinuing might end up being more popular. Forbidden Stars is one I'd LOVE to get my hands on.

I also happened to get the Clash of Cultures expansion well before it went out of print and its worth 4-5x as much as the base game is.

I own Black Fleet which wasn't too expensive (I got it in a trade 3 years ago or so) and now sells for about $80 since its out of print.
