Proving Grounds

Review

I love board games, but sometimes I just can't find time to play with others. So, I resort to solo games. My newest favorite solo game is Proving Grounds. It even comes with a novelette that helps set the theme, and as a writer, I think this combination is awesome! It's a dice chucker at its heart, but I find it to be very exciting--especially with added modules. And that's another thing: with 6 modules, there is a lot of game here!

Have any of you played Proving Grounds? What are your thoughts on it? I was also able to write up a review for it for Everything Board Games, so if you have a minute, check out my thoughts!

I'm not a solo gamer and I rarely read board game reviews. But I had to seeing it's by you! haha

After checking it out though, I really like the idea of including a novellete to go with the game. And I'm actually curious how Renegade Game Studios approached the development of the story. Anyway, I enjoy reading online web comics and light novels, and it made me think about how fun it would be if I could play a game that has art and mechanics set around those stories that I love.

"how fun it would be if I could play a game that has art and mechanics set around those stories that I love."

Seriously, that's half the reason I got so excited about the game in the first place. It helped that it played well too haha I've read some reviews of people who really don't like it, but that's their deal :) I like to write short stories inspired by thematic board games. I find these games can really bring you in, and could very well be told as a narrative. So I experimented and have kept doing it for a while. It's fun. And I say "inspired" by because I'm not about to pay royalties haha And a reader won't need to have played the game to enjoy the story. I would love it if more games incorporated such a thing.

That's awesome! So... when are we going to get to see your game design? :)

These stories are from already-published games, like Flip Ships and Champions of Midgard. The game I'm working on...is still in its infancy, so it'll be a while :)

I have began playing and looking for more solo stuff too since I travel a bit for work and this one seems like a nice addition to my research list!

Kane Klenko is the designer, and he has a number of other games with good solo modes. If you're looking for solo games, check out FUSE. It's not for everyone (my wife can't stand it), but I really like it. It's a 10-minute real-time game where you roll dice and use them to diffuse bombs (i.e. fulfill requirements on cards). It can be quite tense, and is a lot of fun.

I have actually played Fuse but didn’t realize it was able to be played solo! Seems stressful lol

I actually prefer it solo. That way I don't have to waste precious seconds deliberating with others about who needs what haha It plays basically the same as with others, only you have four bomb cards in front of you instead of two, and you roll three dice each time.
