Board Games On Your Radar and Purchasing Habits

Owner

Several weeks ago I shared that I got #Atlantis Rising (second edition)#Clans of Caledonia, and #Architects of the West Kingdom. And I have to say, I'm pretty satisfied with the the bulk purchase and will be doing this more often moving forward because I'm enjoying the variety and getting lots of store credit from a single source. And my next purchase will likely occur during the end of the year sales or any great "buy 2 get 1 free" deals that come along the way.

With that in mind, here are some questions I wanted to ask:

  • Which games have been on your radar recently?
  • What is your purchasing habit like? Do you tend to wait for sales to buy multiple games or do you usually buy them individually as long as the price is somewhat reasonable? Do you typically find that it is better to wait? Or that getting the experience earlier is better?

Here are my answers:

Games on my radar (currently) - this list tends to change a lot depending what everyone's talking about in the forums. Also, it's interesting to note they're all card-based games. Hmmmm...

Purchase habits

  • I don't mind waiting if it'll mean big cost savings.
  • I also don't mind losing out on cost savings if the game is well worth the experience. For example, I'd get #Camel Up (second edition) if I catch any wind of a reprint because I feel like my family will love it.
  • On the other hand, I can wait on the three games mentioned above because all of my recently acquired games have a lot of replay value (they all have variable player powers). I want to make sure to get at least 5 plays in on any of the games I own until I buy more.

I don't usually buy games in bulk unless I've got a big gift card. Generally I just but from Amazon with the money we've budgeted for it each month. So I've been getting a game every month or so.

Games on my radar, in no particular order:

On my Radar:

1. Everdell Expansions

2. Parks

3. Space Base

4. Taverns of Teffenthal

I try to prioritize and not just get whatever strikes my fancy, I tend to get a game a month or so, but can go over that if there is something I will really enjoy. The real limiting factor is space. I'm currently on a one in one out system, so If I get something new I have to get rid of the same number and size. Which means I have to let go of a game I enjoy, it makes me really want the new one... which I think is healthy.

Games on my radar:

#Gaia Project

#Mage Knight: Ultimate Edition

#Hoplomachus: The Lost Cities

#A Feast For Odin: The Norwegians Expansion

#Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North

#Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Im not supposed to buy anything. So I shouldn’t. And probably won’t. But sometimes I’m able to catch something on a good sale and convince my wife that I should get it.

My birthday is in June and that’s my next best chance to get some of those games. I’ll ask my Dad for Mage Knight and my Mom to get me Gaia Project. And I’ll see if my wife will get me the Feast for Odin expansion.

If I did have a budget for buying games, I would try to wait for sales or special offers.

I could have put #Hoplomachus: Origins or #Hoplomachus: The Lost Cities in my list as well.

I think I'm sorta different, with living out of the country, I tend to not get write as caught up in needing something now as some gamers are. Because, I never get anything shipped to me, I always get them shipped to ks and get them there whenever I can. Be of this I tend to go with pre-orders and that sort of thing more often, because I can afford to wait.

Also, so far I haven't gotten sucked into Kickstarter yet. That being said....

Games I am tentatively planning on Kickstarting, if course depending on a bunch of other factors....

  1. #Pax Pamir 2e march 10
  2. #Pax Renaissance March 31

Games that are currently on my Rader, and just waiting a good opportunity to buy, or trade for, or..... Include

  1. #Everdell
  2. #Pax Porfiriana
  3. #Renegade
  4. #Robinson Crusoe Adventures on the Cursed Island
  5. #Greenland
  6. #7 Wonders Duel
  7. #Jaipur
  8. #Clans of Caledonia
  9. #Pax Transhumanity
  10. #Star Realms: Frontiers

The last game I bought was a pre-order of #Pax Emancipation. I hope it gets to ks before I do, but we will see.

Sometimes I think being far away would be a blessing. You wouldn’t be constantly tempted by games and such.

That said, you are really obsessed with all those Pax games, eh?

Supporter15 months ago

Yes, I am falling down a rabbit hole. They are soloable, meaty, and in tiny boxes.

What's your first clue about the pax games?

Supporter15 months ago

I dunno, this is the first time you’ve mentioned them.

Supporter15 months ago

Almost, but not quite.

I know. I firstly took you seriously wrote this response, then I figured you were being facetious. So, I decided to post it anyway.

Games on my radar:

#1  #Architects of the West Kingdom

#2  #Terraforming Mars: Prelude

#3  #Clans of Caledonia

#4  #Call to Adventure

#5  #Aftermath

#6  #The Quacks of Quedlinburg

#7  #Viscounts of the West Kingdom

#8  #A Feast For Odin

#9  #Brass: Lancashire

I tend to buy them individually but sometimes find a trade partner on BGG.  I'm currently exploring the idea of trading 7th Continent with 3 expansions and/or Sword & Sorcery with two expansions for some grouping of the above games.

How do you find the trade experience on BGG? Pretty smooth or is it tough to find someone to trade with?

Premium User15 months ago

Generally folks don't respond very quickly and my trade offers time out.  I think its tough to find a good trade partner.  I've traded twice with boardgameco but was moving a lot for a little and the trades I'm looking for now I'm trying to get better value than I can with a company.  Getting trades with individual folks is tougher.  What I do like is the matches you can gather between your trade list and everyone else.

Nice. Yeah I'd think finding an individual would be ideal since they don't need to make money off the deal, they just want to get a game out of it, so you can get close to equivalent value for your games. But it makes sense that it'd be tough to find someone, especially someone local, which would eliminate shipping costs.
