Favorite Area Control Games?

I have actually only played one true area control game, #Blood Rage but I did not know it when I bought it. I thought it would be more conflict heavy, but the real winning strategy is less fighting and more controlling. I am now more curious at some more area control type games. I know #Root is often mentioned, #El Grande is another, and #Dominant Species is another that blends worker placement with Area Control. What are your favorites??

Love some #Small World

This is definitely one I would like to give a shot, but organizing all of the little components seems like a pretty big undertaking!

Dude this one has been going on sale quite a bit! It was on my wishlist for a tome but I took it off since there were other games that took priority...

It's not that bad, you can take most of it out as you go. You have to bust out the money, tray, mountains and unknown soldiers. It is not that bad, though searching through that tray for the right token in-game can be annoying,

Does it come with an insert or just baggies?

Well, all the race tokens have their own luxurious removable tray with plastic top, but there are some slots for the money, mountains and other random things that may come into play like the troll holes for the troll toll.

It is mostly the race tokens that would seem to be the most tedious! But the containers sound pretty shnazzy!

This is one I've always heard of and see in my peripheral that I don't know much about.  Is there a lot of area control, player interaction, and combat?

It is basically all area control, but you have different creatures or mythical beings with variable powers that make it pretty interesting!

Cool, I'll keep it on my radar.

I think I'd consider #Scythe to have area control and I really like that game.  Of course I love #Root and I feel it has a touch of area control in the fact that you are battling but it doesn't really score you points.  (Although I do think there is a king of the mountain area control aspect in the new expansion).

This is a mechanic I really enjoy.  I'll be glad to see what others here have to say.

I agree, Scythe definitely has area control aspects.

Scythe definitely has this, but it does function differently than a El Grande. The benefit of controlling an area is rarely point, but more the resources the land provide, a unique aspect to it!

Area control can definately play a big part in the end game.

Supporter15 months ago

For sure.  When I smell the end coming I start to spread out as fast and as far as I can.

And oldie that I like is Nexus Ops!

I have actually never heard of that! Good on ya!

Yep! Check it out!

@philryuh would you also consider #Pax Pamir (Second Edition) area control? This is another game that is growing on me, and I know you were not wild about your play through but it is getting a ton of praise in the gaming community.

I feel like I barely got to scratch the surface on that game but I'd say so. I really have to give it another play some day because it felt like a mystery.

I have been watching and reading some more about it and the game is finally starting to make sense to me, it is definitely on the forefront of my brain. Does a member of your group have the game?

#Cry Havoc has elements of this and uses it for different purposes including combat.

#Mission: Red Planet is one I’ve always wanted to try.

Again seeing Cry Havoc.  This is a game that I think came out when I first got into the hobby but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get people to play with me.  But it sounds like something I'd love.  I don't really have a SciFi themed game, and one with combat and area control.  Oh yeah!

Haha it’s pretty cool so far to me! I have an extra copy so if you’re ever interested just let me know if you would want to trade it for something!

Supporter15 months ago

I was just looking into a bit.  Have you ever played with the Expansion?  What's that like?

I haven’t, but I’ve heard it is really good! I need to look into it!

Sounds good!

Sounds like you may have found a new game to learn more about!
