Secret Santa Part 3!

Premium User

My last secret Santa gifts arrived today!

This was from my BGG Secret Santa and is probably a more accurate representation of what people usually send for these things (my super Santa's withstanding).

#Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game - Season One - Sarah's really into true crime and #Chronicles of Crime doesn't really click for us. I'm hoping this one will go over a little better. We were intimidated by the OG #Detective: A Modern Crime Game, but this one seemed a little more beginner friendly. Excited to try it out.

#Mystic Vale: Vale of the Wild Expansion - Wasn't exactly high on my wishlist as I don't think we play enough of our games to warrant expansions for most of them, but #Mystic Vale is a game Sarah is always down to play. So I guess if I had to pick a game to have an expansion for, this would be it! I think we're going to try this one out tomorrow.

And that creepy card was included in the box. I have no idea what it is but it says "Secret Santa" on the other side lol. My best guess is it's something that I'm supposed to pass on to whoever my target is next year.

BUT WAIT! A mystery Secret Santa appeared!

My meetup group sent a message in our discord that they wanted to do a small secret Santa exchange. I of course joined so I'll have even more gifts to share with you once it happens!

Well, I guess since you posted this you can disregard my previous question haha

Sarah wanted to play Detective after work today until I told her the box lists it as an hour and a half minimum. So now I guess we'll play Mystic Vale instead..

1.5 hours doesn't sound too bad.  I don't get dissuaded by gaming time unless you say more than like 4 hours or something.  I think hours spent on a game is great.

Premium User44 days ago

Nah I don't mind it as long as it doesn't feel that long. Once you start to realize wow it's been x number of hours then it's a wrap. This is largely how Sarah is normally but I guess not after an 8 hour workday

Yeah that's true. I bascially never get to play games after a workday so that at least is not an issue anymore haha.

Yeah mine are so long - usually I'm working 12 hours and it's a hike each way on top of it. So I'm usually not down to play something afterwards unless it's super light.#Sonora last night was just the right length I think lol

What do you do if you don't mind me asking?

Premium User41 days ago

Don't mind at all lol. A few other people on here asked me the same thing. I'm a pharmacist

Cool.  So you work 12 hour days?  That's rough but at least you get long weekends

Premium User40 days ago

Yeah but not exactly lol. I still work every other weekend but we aren't open 12 hours then. So depending on the week I either have two 12s, a 6 and a 10 or a 10, a 12, and two 9s.

I do get a 3 day weekend every other week so there's that. But yeah when the commute is an hour one way it's a little rough

I hear ya.  I live in the area of long commutes as well.  Before covid/working from home my commute was about an hour and half.

But at least now I know why you're randomly awake super late in the middle of the week haha

Yeah that's too far lol. I can barely tolerate mine.

Haha I try to go to bed at a reasonable hour even when I'm off the next day. But sometimes I'd just lose track of time 🤷🏻‍♂️. Of course now that Sarah is back living with me all the time now I doubt I'd ever be awake that late/early again.

You and your secret Santas lol. This is cool! I've thought #Mystic Vale seemed interesting for a while now. How do you guys like it?

Hahaha I know I can't get enough of them. Now if only I could simply limit all my game acquisitions to secret Santas...

So short story about Mystic Vale for (probably unnecessary) context. I had watched the BGG GameNight video playthrough of this game and thought it seemed really cool, BUT noticed that the card selection was lacking. Never really felt compelled to pick it up until AEG had a BOGO sale for this and the expansions. I figured the expansions could only help replay value. While I don't exactly know for sure if it did, I can say we had a great time playing it. I find the card crafting to be a fun twist on deck building where you're trying to actually create better cards vs acquire new ones. The only thing I'd say about the expansion we picked up, #Mystic Vale: Twilight Garden Expansion, is the vale cards have a weird way of depicting points. They'll show both positive and negative values, which just seems odd considering they could have simply had a total of the two.

And I gotta say, the AEG customer service is great. Some of the cards came bent and completely unusable without ripping the sleeves. I emailed them about it right before covid. They shut down for months and when everything opened back up, they got back to me and sent replacements!

Huh, interesting. It does sound like a neat game with a cool twist.

On the points...maybe there are card effects that do something like "double the positive points from a card" or "ignore all negative points this turn" or something? Just trying to think of why they'd need to do that.

Premium User46 days ago

That would be a good design element lol. The vale cards usually are just end of game points or sometimes abilities you can use during the game. As far as I know cards as you described don't exist.

Either way it is a really fun game. And the art is nice enough where I think you'd enjoy it lol
