My Top 5 Games That My Wife Doesn't Really Like

Let me preface this by saying that I am very blessed to have a wife who enjoys playing games with me. She enjoys most of the games I buy, and I do my best to buy games that she will like. That being said, they aren't all winners in that department. So, here 5 of those, in order of how much I like them.

  1. #Santorini - this is one of my favorite games overall (probably top 5). So far she hasn't enjoyed it. I don't think she likes abstract strategy (more on that further down). There may be hope, though, as she has agreed to give this another shot.
  2. #The Fox in the Forest - I don't think she likes trick-taking games. Either that, or they just haven't "clicked" with her yet. Anyway, to me, this is a nice little game with good decisions and some nice tension, but not too much tension.
  3. #Hive Pocket -  abstract strategy. This is a great little game. She's said she'd play it with me on trips, since it's such a good travel game. We'll see.
  4. #Lost Cities - feels too mathy and abstracted to her. I also think she doesn't enjoy the tension you feel all the way through this one. I do.
  5. #Jixia Academy (Hanamikoji) - she HATED this one, haha. I gave it away. I enjoy this game, but I kind of get where she's coming from. Because there's so much hidden information, it's hard to actually formulate a plan that's better than guessing. You can do it, but it's not easy or apparent.

She hasn't actually played #Dune, so I'll leave it off the list, but I'm just assuming she wouldn't enjoy it, haha.

mu wife dislikes "dudes on a map" games; no need to make a top 5.
#Paladins of the West Kingdom doesn't seem like something for her but I'll win her over with Everdell :D

I don't think my wife has really played a dudes on a map game yet, but I kinda think she wouldn't be into it due to the direct conflict. She does, however, love #Everdell! If your wife can pick up the rules pretty easily (it's not too complex), then there's a pretty good chance she'll be into that one.

Great idea. The list for me is:

1. #Too Many Bones this one looked too intimidating when it was set up on the table so she noped out, but she's warming ot the idea of giving it a try

2. #Great Western Trail "it's a jumbled up mess of random elements"... still bitter to this day about that take!

3. #Irish Gauge "it's too hard to get back into the game when you're losing" definitely truth to that, it's meaner than it looks

4. #Arctic Scavengers: Base Game + HQ + Recon "its so bleak"

5. #Chronicles of Crime "it devolves into random scanning after a while" I agree with this as well. #Detective: A Modern Crime Game is my #1 crime mystery game by an incredibly long way. I think it dunks on consulting detective and while I respect chronicle's design, the app's not for me.

Haha, going through a bunch of old posts? Nice list! Yeah my wife does not like mean games either, so train games are pretty much all out for us, not that I have any interest in them anyway. I'm surprised at that take on GWT, considering how high it is on a lot of lists!

Fun list! Now that would be a report I'd love to hear about, your wife playing #Dune with you haha

I wonder what made her want to try out Go? Like you said, it's basically at the top of the abstract food chain xD

Haha, she's said she would be willing to learn, but understands that she probably won't like it.

And I'm not sure. I asked her when she said that, and she said something like "I don't know, I guess the creativity with the strategy", which, to me, could be applied to most games, so I don't know why this is one that stood out to her.
