My wife and I recently had a double date with some good friends from our church. But because Covid 19 we actually tried a game night instead of going out for dinner. Many of you know that my wife is not the biggest fan of learning new board games but she does know and enjoy#Catan. The couple we played with hadn't played Catan before so we decided to teach them and play the game.
Spoiler alert: Catan is still really fun! Despite all the growth I've had with my time in the hobby it's fun to go back to the beginning and experience the game again.
I was particularly surprised by how well Catan introduces and teaches basic mechanics for board games. Hand management and negotiation. Collecting and using resources. Building and upgrading structures.
Everyone had a great time and I'm hopeful that we might have started a new game group! It would be so awesome to have a group with my wife and spend more time together.
What do you all think of Catan? I'm glad that it still has a spot in my collection.

I still enjoy it too! I use it to introduce people to what board games can be when they say something like "Oh yeah I love board games! I play Monopoly all the time!" Although probably people would argue that I should use Ticket to Ride or something now but Catan was my gateway game too

I've surprisingly never played Catan more so due to lack of opportunity vs not having desire to try it

I love my children but yeah, kids kill game night. It's doable if only one member of the gaming group has kids, then you just meet at their house, but if multiple members do then forget it. They have bedtime, naptime, want to eat the pieces, get bored, need to eat, its all very inconvenient haha.

100% of the reason I got the expansion. Purple being my favorite color made it an obvious choice. Did you end up picking that up? Or planning on getting the new one? I already preordered oops lol

I bought the expansion. I had added the new one to my cart and then... not so much decided to hold off as convinced myself to decide later because I haven't opened up the 1st expansion yet haha.

Get it open! I think it adds a ton to the game. Helps get away from the end game laying eggs problem with some of the "round end" bird powers.

Oh man long time yet. I've started to play some games with the 3 year old. She's surprisingly good at #Animal Upon Animal but only just has the concept of taking turns. What kind of games are you using to introduce the hobby to your kids?
#My First Castle Panic and#My Little Scythe have been popular.#Monopoly Junior and#UNO too.

oooh ok I have My Little Scythe, just waiting until she gets old enough. We've started "playing" #Carcassonne where we take turns putting together map tiles. She likes doing that.

I think that I would be super impatient to get to the age where they can actually sit and play a game haha. #Animal Upon Animal seems like it would be a good one though!

Its fun for adults too! The best kind of kids game. I suspect there will come a time very soon where she's better than me at it

Catan was my gateway game and I still really enjoy playing it. It still has broad appeal as well. I ran a national qualifier pre-Covid and had 24 people show up who pretty much only played Settlers as their boardgame of choice.
I also recently made a 3d printed set and painted it. Still a great game!
