Game page idea: Game Attribute Ratings

BGA Feature Request

So we already have the ratings for "learning complexity" and "strategic complexity", which are super helpful measurements, especially once there is a good number of ratings in the database for a game. I was thinking that it would be cool to have even more. If it makes the page harder to scan, perhaps they could hidden in a "show more ratings" type of visual.

Some ideas:

  • Recommended player count - this is on BGG already, and I use it constantly when learning about games
  • Player interaction level - a scale of how much player interaction there is in the game
  • Player interaction type - a scale from negative to positive interaction
  • Art/aesthetics - subjective scale of how much people enjoy the art and overall aesthetics of the game. May be less relevant since most of the time you can just look at photos
  • Colorblind friendliness - how easy or difficult it will be to play for someone who has trouble with colors
  • Longevity - how well the game holds up to repeated plays. This could be riskier, and is also subjective. Obviously people who like the game will naturally give this a higher rating, as they are more willing to play the game again. Maybe it's not a good idea, but hey, I'm just throwing ideas out.

Those are some ideas off the top of my head. What do you all think? Would it be cool to have these kind of ratings?

Would you actually take the time to rate them?

Does Trent hate me for introducing more complexity to his game pages?

What are some other ideas for additional attribute ratings that could be included on a game's page?

I'm just getting around to this but great ideas! I'd have a lot of fun with the art/aesthetics one lol (time to go to through Lookout Games' page....). I'd probably refer to the player count and player interaction related metrics the most

Lol, poor Lookout Games. Yeah I think the player interaction metric would be super helpful!

These are fun, especially player interaction level and type.  You know I'd hit up a lot of negative player interaction games.

Yeah I think those would be most helpful to me personally, at least of the ones I mentioned.

I really like all these. I would probably try to rank my games on these metrics if it were available.

Great ideas! I personally think I would utilize the player interaction metrics quite a bit to try and find games that are more our style. Aka no interaction lol

Haha, you guys should try #Paladins of the West Kingdom! It's a bit on the heavier side, but learning it isn't too bad, in my opinion.

We actually own it and to say it's our favorite game would be a huge lie. I think it's approaching the trade or sell pile.

Oh yeah? Why is that?

For one thing I just think the set up and tear down is a lot for what it is. If I liked it more I'd consider getting an insert with some individial player boxes to make it easier on myself.

Also, and I admit this one is a stupid reason to not like the game lol, it's just been not easy to learn or get better at. I feel like I've been progressively getting worse and it's just not fun to me.

Can't argue that. Setup and teardown is pretty brutal for that one.

Hahaha, that's not a stupid reason. Sometimes games just don't click and that's fine. There are plenty of games.

Yeah it's a pain. If I was better at the game I don't think I'd mind it so much lol.

I want to like it. It actually reminds me of Orléans in a way. So I should like it. But yeah I'm not good at strategizing lol. Won't say I dislike it just yet

Haha, totally get it

Great idea! I would personally have people rate positive and negative player interaction separately rather than one scale. As some games have a lot of one, some a lot of both, some neither and some a bit of one and a lot of the other and it would be nice to be able to differentiate that.

I think accessibility is a great thing to rate games on. I think language dependency and fiddily-ness (for individuals with nerve damage) would be good things to know too!

I think while I don't do a tonne of game page edits, this would be easier to do than a review but feel more meaningful than just scoring something out of 5. So maybe I would do this more for games.

I think you're right about having the positive and negative interactions on different scales, for the reasons you described. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a game that does both, but I know they exist, haha. Maybe #Cosmic Encounter? I guess many negotiation games?

How would you classify an auction? It's high interaction, but I don't know if it's necessarily positive or negative.

I think the colorblind thing is a good step towards cataloguing accessibility in games. Something else that BGG does that was super helpful sometimes was language dependency ratings.

Oh that's cool, that would be a good idea as well.

I like the first 3.  Indifferent on the art, colorblind and longevity.

I would probably spend some time and go through the games I own to add those rankings.

Cool! Any other ideas for helpful measurements?

Actual play time for different player counts would be useful.  I love boxes that say 120 - 240 min or give you such a large range.

I wonder if there is a way to determine the amount of AP within the game, but again you get that concept through the complexity attributes.

Oh the first one would be very helpful! Some of that is kinda baked into the "recommended player count" on BGG, but it might be helpful to break that out to see if the game experience is better or worse a t certain counts, playtime aside. And then yeah obviously getting more accurate predictions on time would be helpful in itself.
