Root Faction & Strategy

Strategy

I know we've spoken about this before but we have a lot of new people so I'm interested again.  Plus I know people's opinions can change over time.  So...

1. What is your favorite Root Faction and why?

2. Do you have a strategy you like to employ?  Does it every cause problems playing other factions (I'm going to give my example in the comments)

PS - @philryuh (I couldn't find the Feedback Friday post but I was going to do this originally as a poll, but we can only do 4 poll options.  Any chance we can up that?)

I’m with Phil. I enjoy playing as the WA. It’s satisfying building up support and unleashing your rage upon the unsuspecting tyrants.

Nice, and I'm not surprised (Star Wars, haha).  Although you have also only played the base game?  I think we should try to get on TTS this summer and play and ya'll can try/learn some of the Expansion Factions too.

Also, you'll be happy to hear that I got in a game of #Star Wars Imperial Assault with my buddies last night.  They won (as the Rebels), although I did mess up one thing that may have slowed them down, but I think they would have ended up winning anyway.  I also made one big error that cost me.

Yeah, I've wanted that myself too! I'll let Trent know that we want more. We can entertain the idea of allowing users to add in more poll options like how facebook does it, but for now, what do you think would be a good cap for the options? Ten?

1. My favorite faction is still the Woodland Alliance since I haven't played with the expansions yet. In real life, people typically think of me as a calm, even-keeled kind of guy. So when I play Root, I have fun playing the mental game with others by scattering the sympathy tokens around. But besides that, I just enjoy WA's very unusual pacing of starting out with such a small yet nagging presence that keeps growing. It also has one of the most story-making potential out of all other factions in the base game, alongside the Vagabond.

2. Hmm not sure about this one but from the few plays I've had with WA, I realized I need to play a lot more aggressively. I typically like to go on the offense as often as possible but when it came to WA, my past plays were a lot about figuring out their pacing and learning when it's ok to leave my base relatively defenseless. I still don't know what's an optimal strategy for them so I'm looking forward to getting more experience.

Nothing new lol xD

I finally played against the bot last night too!

sdirrane Supporter4 days ago | 1 point[-]

Nice!  Did you play as Woodland?  And which bot(s) did you run?

How was it?

Oh and I think 8 would be fine for options haha!  No 10 would be good, I love the idea too of being able to let other users add options.

I have only played as the Birds twice. But I learned the hard way with them that you can really jump out in the lead and you get just this massive target on your back. A slow build is more conducive to a victory with them.

I really want to play as the Vagabond and the Riverfolk at some point. They both just seem like such fun puzzles and oddly neutral in conflcts.

I think I'd love the Riverfolk because you'd have to talk a lot and sell the other factions on spending money on what you have to offer.  I love the personality of not really having a dog in the fight of who will win, you just want to make the most money.

You really need to be a peddler for sure! You cannot employ a "soft sell" approach!

sdirrane Supporter5 days ago | 1 point[-]

I have definitely been annoyed at the Riverfolk for not selling me enough on things.  And after I'm like man, you missed out, I would have bought that card, or your riverboats, don't let me forget.

I am not a natural seller of things so I understand...but if you wanna win you gotta play to your strengths lol

1. Mine is still the Lizard Cult, I think this is due in part to the fact that I still haven't had the chance to play the Riverfolk, with the Duchy coming in at second place.  I really love the challenge of the Lizard Cult and planning around where you are going to be able to do actions.  I also really enjoy moving yourself into positions to be attacked.

2. I've been playing with the Duchy a lot which can be a defense minded faction because if you lose a building that bad news for you.  Well I played the Marquise like that and found I was too timid playing that way (I've only played the Marquise twice but the Duchy about 5 times).
