Top 100's: Board Game Atlas vs BGG vs r/boardgames

Lists...I like lists and I think many of you do too.

I thought I'd take a few minutes to follow a tradition I see on other sites where top 100 lists are compared.

I did a straight copy paste from the sites and did some excel work to get them in a reasonable format.  I'm NOT an expert on data analysis so I won't be doing some fancy analysis to tell you interesting data points.  I'm sure there is someone else more capable (and motivated) than me to do that.

If this is something you enjoy, let me know and I'll do it again.  (I can't commit to a regular timeline right now however.)

I did do one piece of analysis which is shown below the list.   What interesting things do you spot in the data?

First off, here is the list:

Edit: I should have probably recorded the time I gathered this data because the list changed quite a bit all of a sudden since this morning.

Is this because we are talking about certain games which bumps up their trending or are people voting up their favourites?  I have no idea.

Very cool! I'm also interested in the games that come up on all three lists. Kida does point to some of the best ones .

Premium User6 months ago

I think it definitely gives a good starting place at the very least.  Or as someone else pointed out, they don't like games on top 100 lists so it's a good place for them to NOT start. :)

Supporter6 months ago

Well that is true.

Premium User6 months ago

I don't pay too much attention to lists like these because as mentioned, they're very subjective. It is interesting to see that I've played quite a few of them though.

Premium User6 months ago

Agreed.  It's just a bit of fun.

Supporter6 months ago

Great comparison. I love BGA but I actually think BGG currently has their top 100 in a better order. At least according to my preferences.

Premium User6 months ago

I'm a bit mixed on that.  I like heavier games but the BGG ratings have a lot of old ratings that haven't been reevaluated.

I am intrigued to see how the trending aspect BGA uses will modify things.  Perhaps it'll expose me to games I normally wouldn't see anywhere else?

Supporter6 months ago

True story - the trending feature is useful indeed. But that might only capture the games that are popular and cool, not ones that are hidden gems.

Premium User6 months ago

True but hidden gems don't show up on top 100 lists anyways.  Otherwise they aren't very hidden.  :)

Some of my favourite games aren't top 100 but I find the top 100 is a good place to start when you are new.  After a while though it's more a pleasant curiosity.

I am happy to report that all of the games on all 3 lists are ones that I am aware of and have made decisions about whether they belong in my collection.  So your hard work will not result in a decrease in my bank balance, but nice try anyway.

It is interesting to see which 41 games are on all 3 lists.

Supporter6 months ago

Lol. That's hilarious!

Curses!  Foiled again!

;)

It is interesting to see the overlap which is pretty extensive but also to see the differences to get some different style games to try.

I do love lists, thanks for sharing! Of the games I've played that are on all three lists, the only ones that I've found personally to be a bit underwhelming (but still solid games) are: #Five Tribes, #Concordia, and #Viticulture: Essential Edition. It goes to show that this is such a diverse hobby that for some people these are their very favorite games!

Premium User6 months ago

Concordia is one of my favourites and I like Five Tribes and Viticulture but there's no obligation for anyone else to like them.

For example, I won't play #Pandemic unless my group REALLY wants to.  We played 14 games of #Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 in a short period and I've had enough of it.  Maybe one of the new versions would be ok to play but I'm kind of done with it.

But yeah, lists are fun to start conversation or as starting points to find cool new games! :)

Interesting, data is beautiful. I haven't even heard of so many of these games

Premium User6 months ago

There are so many out there these days!  A list like this would be very useful as a starting point to maybe find a new game. :)

Nice list and interesting to compare.  Knowing that these are subjective by nature I hesitate to make much as far as conclusions just by looking at them. I did feel there were less weighty games on the BGA side as compared to BGG and Reddit and that heavier games were rated higher on those lists in general.  I have my own rubrik when it comes to assessing games and giving them a rating.

I do use lists like this sometime in trying to find a new game to play.  I'll look for a popular game, look at the reviews, watch a playthrough of two, and ponder getting a game.  That being said there are certainly games that rank highly and fall outside the realm of games I'd pursue for one reason or another. #Twilight Struggle is a good example of this.  I played the game once with someone who bought it because it has bene on the list for so long.  I found the game to be too erratic and while the rules and theme make sense they did not resonate with me the way I think they might with others.

I think overall I have a harder time ranking games as objectively as I can rank say...beer.  I can drink a beer I don't prefer due to style or whatenot and rank it within its own categories.  I have a more challenging time doing that with games.

Supporter6 months ago

You make a good point about game categories. There are some game categories that I just don't care for, and it is hard for me to see the value of a game in those categories.

Premium User6 months ago

I forgot to mention that I feel the same way about Twilight Struggle.  I can see why other people like it but it's not for me.

Premium User6 months ago

I beat my brother on turn three with a silly card.  I've sure if we both understand the rules and gameplay more that would not have happened.  Still, that it could happen at all made it feel like chess more than a board game.

Premium User6 months ago

Ah yeah for that one knowing all the crazy cards is important.  Games like #War of the Ring (Second Edition) and #Star Wars: Rebellion are like that too.

They require you to play them quite a bit before it becomes really engaging.  I don't always have the time or inclination for that myself either.

Premium User6 months ago

I hear you there.  Of course it's all subjective and I don't take it too seriously.  Like you I tend to think of it as a good place to start.

As others have pointed out, BGG is hauling along years and years of ratings many of which might not have been updated ever.  The Reddit ratings are based on the BGG ratings of the boardgames subreddit (Those who signed up for it anyway.) so likely will have some of the same issues although not as bad.

BGA has that "trending" stat that is part of their ratings formula and I think it might save them from the same fate.  A game that was popular but is not discussed much any longer won't rate as highly which should help with some of the baggage that props up games on BGG.

I do enjoy the science and art around ratings systems.  There are very interesting approaches that can be taken to it.

Interesting that #Pax Pamir (Second Edition) is quite high on the Reddit list but not represented on BGG or BGA. It's highly rated on both sites, but somehow the vote count isn't high enough on BGG and BGA, while being high enough on Reddit.

I believe #Pax Pamir (Second Edition) has made some big jumps in the BGG rankings recently, due to the latest reprint and winning the Golden Elephant from Heavy Cardboard.  As highly as everyone speaks of it, I don't think it will be too long before it breaks the top 100.

Premium User6 months ago

I've only played it the once.  It wasn't my cup of tea really but if people enjoy it and it makes the top 100 then great!

I own it, but haven't played it yet.  From what I understand though, it's definitely not a game for everyone and it's exactly that, it's lack of broad appeal, that will limit how high it rises.

Premium User6 months ago

I think part of the problem is that it needs a few plays for the ins and outs to really become clear and we have only given it the one shot.

Definitely. It's not a game you're going to "get" completely on your first play.  On the plus side though, that's true of a lot of the best games out there.
