Honestly, hard for me to not back this...

Crowdfunding

Starlight

I feel like I can't (although I haven't been spending as much because of quarantine) but it looks like it hits so many check marks for me.

You may remember when I was offering ideas for creating a game I loved the idea of having a game that takes place in Space and on Planet.  Gosh, this is gonna be hard.  And also, I don't usually care about Minis, and I still don't, but they are pretty.

Also, I love the customization this games seems to offer.

Someone talk me out of it.

I think this game sounds amazing. But it sounds amazing because it doesn’t really technically exist yet. Let’s wait until it hits retail and go from there.

Exactly.  Let's wait and see if it actually is amazing.  It'll be nice to have some more reviews next summer.

Skurvy5 Supporter2 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yup. Once it exists in the Wild too. I don’t always 100% trust some of the Kickstarter preview reviews.

sdirrane Supporter2 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah most of them are paid reviews.  Usually if a reviewer does a good job showing how the game plays I can form my own opinion even if the previewed is paid.

After reading others' comments, I'm glad I held back my urge to comment a gif of JUST DO IT last night. I know nothing about the game xD

So have you been able to stick to your commitment so far? And still have money for some bling that you were thinking about?

With everything I saw even if I wasn't committed to only buying one game this year I would have avoided it.  Waiting 12 months for Oath from a designer and publisher I trust is one thing, waiting 18 months for a game from a company and publisher I've never heard of.  That's very different.  It'll definitely be on my radar when it hits retail though.

And so far, I have kept to my resolution.  I backed Oath and that is the only game money I've spent.  I still haven't done any bling but I do check prices.  I remember Scythe Metal Coins being around $20 at one point.  If they drop low then I will definitely consider them, same thing with Viticulture, and possibly Clans (although I don't know that I've been able to find metal coins for Clans).

Nice, I've also had a number of games come up this year that I felt so tempted to buy. But I reminded myself to keep to the budget and actually found that after a couple of weeks, I wasn't as dying to get them anymore haha.

As for Clans' metal coins, they do seem to be out of stock on most stores. I did see this one though, which for some reason isn't listed on BGA. https://www.cardhaus.com/clans-of-caledonia-metal-coins/

Yeah, I've been really pleased with my resolve so far.  It really has me focusing on the games I have already.  There hasn't been anything out there that I feel like I have to have.  By the time this game hits retail I'll know more about it and have money to pick it up.

Yeah, I think for me bling is going to have to come in at $22 or less to really consider it.  Thanks for looking!

I’m proud of you Scott! And my wife would be too.

@theDL is very right about the risks..... $75 is a chunk of change for so many unknowns. But, there are other factors to consider as well.

For the amount of content offered, I think that $75 is way too low. If it ever comes to retail I think it will probably have a lot lower quality of components, or a lot fewer components, or be a lot more expensive.

Also, this game is gutsy. For a new designer /publisher to start or with this is extremely gutsy.... These sorts of projects are likely to fail... Except for when they don't and you end up with #gloomhaven or #7th Continent. And, if this game is the next Gloomhaven, you really want to get in on it now.

I think the game looks cool. But, personally, I'm not super interested. Several things that keep me away, apart from what theDL mentioned, include:

  • I expect the box size to be too big. I can't move boxes like that, and international travel is a huge problem with that sort of thing.
  • I like the theme and the art, but the theme does seem somewhat generic. Here a lot depends on the quality of the story.

So, I may have given you more reasons to back it than not to back it.... But... You know that is what your really want.

Talk you out of it? Well $75 is a lot of money for a game from a fairly unproven publisher and a fairly unproven designer. Not to mention the fact that it is not even estimated to ship for over a year. Plus it's fully funded many times over, so your chances of getting one via retail of the game turns out well are pretty high.

I thought about this as well.  Thanks, I think I'll wait for retail.

Skurvy5 Supporter2 months ago | 1 point[-]

Too bad it’s going to be such a long wait.

sdirrane Supporter2 months ago | 1 point[-]

Yeah, for sure another reason I won't be backing.
