Folded Space Insert - thoughts

I wasn't a huge fan of the insert for #Viticulture: Essential Edition, and GameNerdz has started carrying Folded Space inserts, so I decided to try one out. I'm impressed! It was fairly easy to put together, it's very light, and makes setup and teardown easier and much more enjoyable than it was with the stock insert.

There are slots for all of the cards, and removable trays for the coins and for the player tokens. Each player gets their own tray, so you can just pass them out and they are ready to go! I cannot verify it, as I only have the base game, but supposedly this insert can accommodate the expansions as well. As you can see, there is still plenty of room for more cards, and there is also room for a board(s?) on the far right (on the other side of the visitor cards).

Overall I'm very happy with this insert! It's much more reasonably priced than Broken Token or similar wooden inserts, and it's easier and lighter as well.

The game set up

I've seen these inserts and wondered about them. I think I'd be most concerned to see if they are durable over time or if they will wear down quick .

I don't really see it wearing down very quickly unless you're pretty rough with it. It feels pretty durable. I'd say the most likely thing to happen is that something comes un-glued, in which case you can simply re-glue it.

Makes sense. They are a very good price and I have some games I need to get inserts for. They're just too bulky

what material is it made of?

They call it Evacore. They describe it on their homepage: https://www.foldedspace.net/

Thanks

I’ve never actually purchased an insert before. This one definitely looks nice though!

This is the 2nd one I've purchased, and I have another that was 3d printed by a friend, and I have a few games for which I've done some makeshift inserts (namely tossing the insert and using baggies/containers). This is my favorite one, I think! Obviously the makeshift ones are much cheaper (free), but this one is so clean!

I guess I never considered that using baggies or containers was considered an insert. I do that for almost all of my games.

Haha, yeah I guess it's more of the lack of an insert, but it serves the same function in the end.

That looks very nice!  How much does that cost compared to Broken Token?

On GameNerdz this was like $13 (not including shipping). I haven't looked for the Broken Token version for this specific game, but it would not surprise me at all if it was over $30, and even over $40.

Wow that looks so nice! I store my box vertically though, would that just make everything dump out?

I stored it vertically, and the only thing I noticed was that a couple of coins slipped out of their tray. The boards go on top of everything, so it stays pretty well, though with just the base game, it doesn't quite reach the top of the box. I'd imagine that with expansion stuff in there, it's even tighter, so that may not happen. If the coin thing begins to annoy me, I may just put something in the bottom of the box to push everything up a couple of centimeters until I get Tuscany.

Wow. Nice!

That pretty much sells it in my book then. It looks so nice!

Yeah it even looks pretty good, too. The gray color doesn't look quite as pretty as wood to my eyes, but for all of the other advantages, a slight downgrade in looks is more than worth it.

Just ordered! Thanks for posting this, I really like the idea of upgrading the games I play the most and see a long future for.

Awesome!! Glad to be of service  :D

I want this O_  O

I've seen this before but I think you convinced me. Since it's one of our most played games, I can immediately see how it would significantly improve the experience. Great picture as always :)

Also, how was the solo game? (have you soloed it before?) When I tried it the first time, I got so competitive against the Automa that I played 3 times in a row because I couldn't beat it (I soloed using the Tuscany board)

I am 0-2 against the Automa on normal difficulty, haha. This time I ended up tied, which was excruciating, haha. In the final season of the final year I actually had workers left, AND an order I could fill, but the spaces to do so were occupied.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I believe I'm still 0-4 against the Automa with Tuscany board lol

By the way, your point about the folded space insert being lighter than wood is a good point. My custom insert for #Clans of Caledonia is nice to look at but makes the box so much heavier (and much more expensive). It's ok since it's a small box to begin with, but for something like Viticulture, I think I'd prefer going with a lighter option!

Haha, it's tough!

And yeah, it's not a huge deal since the games mostly sit on the shelf, but it's just nice when it's not too heavy. I have a broken token insert for 7 Wonders Duel, and even with that small box, the extra weight is noticeable.
