Updates on Board Game Atlas

Owner
BGA

I've been a little quiet the past two days (well, more than usual) because Trent and I were going through some major changes.

Long story short, Trent entered a competition (pre COVID-19) to pitch about Board Game Atlas and it was announced two days ago that we won $120K competing against 6 other finalists. So after 1.5 years since launch, Trent and I finally got all of the investments needed for both of us to be working on this full-time without worrying about how we'll feed our families!

So what does that mean? I'll finally be able to afford #Too Many Bones for myself and get @nealkfrank a present! Ok, not really (I'm sorry Neal)... but we will have some good things coming for all of you.

Here are some thoughts/ideas I wanted to share after some major brainstorming session Trent and I had today:

Giveaways - You may have noticed that I haven't started the next round of our usual $60 board game giveaways. I'm in the process of changing up couple of things but I'm currently thinking of running 3 different types:

  • Our usual $60 board game giveaways but as a gift card (every two weeks as usual)
  • Partnered/sponsored Gleam giveaways working with publishers (whenever the opportunity rises)
  • Plus some random giveaways every now and then that will target growing our YouTube channel and some specific articles/content that we'd like to promote

Contests/events - We're also wanting to hold monthly contests or events. We have some rough ideas here and there but we're still needing to brainstorm on this. And as always, we're always up for suggestions! Some rough ideas we have are:

  • Game design competition - One event we've really wanted to do is to have a design event for people of color where we can offer a scholarship. We'd also like to hold one for any aspiring designers where we could have industry professionals on board to rate the designs (plus have "audience votes" from the community
  • I'm even thinking of starting up random challenges like posting your best "shelfie," playing X number of games or games that have been sitting on your shelf, creating the best board game meme and see who gets the highest vote, etc.

Rewards - Besides giveaways, we've been wanting to create ways to reward everyone for their participation. For example, I want to get back to my drawing board and create some badges/icons that you can earn by unlocking some achievements. This could involve winning one of the random challenges mentioned above, or being a good conversation starter, someone who posts lots of great images, someone who posts lots of memes, someone who plays the most number of games, the person voted for the "best comment of the week/month," etc.

Content - I'll be focusing on long-form data driven articles and my interviews. Plus, we're thinking of doing some more stunts similar to the 24 hour marathon of #Welcome to... that Trent did a while back (remember, we still have #Monopoly: Longest Game Ever sitting on our shelf at the office).

Anyway, I'll leave it at this for now but just wanted to keep everyone in the loop! Thanks for continuing to support this community :D

Also, much as I approve of wacky stunts in general,  even more monopoly is not something I would ask anyone to put themselves through!

If we do go through it, I hope it'll be fun for those watching at least hahaha. Another idea I had was doing a marathon of 10 different games of increasing complexity (I guess we can't play #Twilight Imperium 4th Edition with 2p though)

Start with Sushi Go! and end with Kingdom Death: Monster?

It'd be really interesting to see that happen with someone relatively new to gaming at some point (maybe not in marathon format, over weeks/months instead). As in start someone off with a gateway game and then build them up to an epic game and document their experiences, kind of what most gamers have experienced throughout their time with the hobby but in microcosm.

But also, the marathon idea would be very cool, although playing the most mentally taxing games last would be rough!

This would be really cool!

Nice work you guys! I am incredibly pleased for you to get to do what you love full time, also very excited for what it will mean for the site in terms of the love and attention you will be able to give it :)

Thank you! By the way, I'm curious. Do you usually go by Robert? Or Bob? Or Bobert? (I have a friend who goes by that)

I think I tend to go with Rob most often (sometimes Robert), Courageous Bob is just a username I came up with at some point and enjoyed the juxtaposition of courageous: a fairly grand word suggesting adventure and action, with 'Bob':  a name that is rarely inspiring that suggests banality.

Bobert!  Love it!!  Haven't heard that before.

This is incredible! I’m so proud and excited for BGA. It’s been a pleasure to be part of this community and so much fun watching it grow. BGA is amazing and will go so far and I’m looking forward to being along for the ride.

I think all of your ideas sound great. The giveaway process sounds like it will continue to help drive growth for the website. The contests sound like they will continue to build bonds and strengthen the community.

Incredible news!

Oh man, this was dirty Phil lol. Hope were risen, then crushed in an instant. But I am excited about the new opportunities and investments into the site and the community!

Lol my bad, I couldn't help it xD (at least you have #Aeon's End: Legacy to keep you busy in the meantime)

If we meet some major milestones in the next 12 months, maybe I'll actually be able to do that hahaha. Thanks for the support as always.

Haha I still appreciated the sentiment :) Above all though I am excited for the growth this place is experiencing!

Wow, that is fantastic! Congratulations! So does that mean you're leaving your day job?

Owner11 months ago

Thanks David! Yup, I made all of the calls to my coworkers and my former bosses about the news. This October was going to be my 5 year anniversary but I'm done! haha

Congratulations @philryuh!  Games are way more fun! :-)

That is great news. Congrats. I have enjoyed this page ever since I saw an ad for it. I was orginally just looking at board game prices but now it does feel like a community. I check the site almost every day and comment when I can. I like the contest ideas and looking forward to the new content. Great job!
